Piero Liatti (born May 7, 1962 in Biella ) is a former Italian rally driver .

Career

Liatti actually began his career on the racetrack, but his involvement in the 1981 Italian Renault 5 Cup was so sparse that he can hardly be called a former racer driver. These first attempts at motorsport remained piecemeal. In 1985 he got into rallying. He became a team-mate of Alex Fiorio at Jolly Club Totip and started in the Fiat Uno Italian Championship from mid-season . After Fiorio switched to the World Rally Championship in 1986 , Liatti played another season in the Fiat Uno Championship for the team and secured the overall standings at the end of the year.

In 1987 he switched to a Lancia Rally 037 and contested the Italian rally championship with this vehicle. The end of the 1990s it rose in the European Rally Championship one whose Appreciation it in 1991 on a work - Lancia Delta Integrale 16V won. In 1990 he made his debut in the World Rally Championship at the San Remo Rally . After Lancia withdrew, Liatti switched to Prodrive in 1993 and drove there with Subaru rally vehicles in the world championship. However, he only played a full season in the world championship in 1998 as a teammate of Colin McRae . His only victory in the world championship also fell during his collaboration with Subaru. In 1997 he won the Monte Carlo Rally . In 1999 he moved to Seat , but had no success there. After several unsuccessful rallies at Ford and Hyundai , Liatti retired from motorsport in late 2004.

Liatti was considered a fast driver, but was prone to errors and was rarely able to maintain his pace for an entire rally event. His speed is documented by 72 special stage best times in only 53 rallies in the world championship. Despite this high number of best times, he was only able to celebrate one overall victory and was on the podium of the top three only nine times.
