report

Snow and ice, sometimes heavy rain and then bright sunshine again: the Monte Carlo Rally lived up to its reputation as the most unpredictable rally on the WRC calendar and challenged the drivers in a wide variety of weather conditions. The choice of tires was correspondingly difficult; you had to choose from dry tires, rain tires and winter tires with and without spikes.

Once again, Sébastien Ogier mastered this challenge best , who won the Monte Carlo Rally for the fifth time in a row and celebrated his sixth victory in this rally. The M-Sport pilot won the first two special stages on Thursday evening and then increased his lead over the pursuers on Friday.

The duo Sébastien Ogier and co-driver Julien Ingrassia were definitely not given victory. On Friday afternoon they slipped into a ditch in heavy rain during the seventh special stage. Fortunately, there were plenty of spectators on site to push the car back onto the road. On Saturday, Ogier distanced his pursuers on the snowy ninth special stage by a good minute and then concentrated on managing his lead.

Ott Tänak celebrated a successful debut at Toyota with second place . The Estonian showed no teething problems in the Yaris WRC, won four special stages and underlined his ambitions to fight for the world title in the 2018 season. Jari-Matti Latvala in third and Esapekka Lappi in seventh completed Toyota's good result .

For Citroën , the rally ended with a mixed result. Fourth place for Kris Meeke and ninth place for Craig Breen were not what the French manufacturer had hoped for. Meeke had fallen back more than two minutes after an accident on Thursday evening, but he was not able to keep up with the fastest as the rally continued.

It was even worse for Hyundai , for which the fight for both world titles began with a setback. Thierry Neuville slipped into a ditch in the first special stage after a few kilometers, from which he was only able to free himself after a good four minutes with the help of some spectators. Andreas Mikkelsen had technical problems on Friday . In second place, the generator of his i20 WRC turned off a lot after the third special stage, which forced the Norwegian to give up for the day. The last hope for a top result was Dani Sordo . But the Spaniard shouldn't see the goal. On Saturday he flew off the road in third place in the ninth special stage and retired.
