The 83rd Monte Carlo Rally was the first of 13 FIA - World Cup races in 2015 , it lasted from 22 to 25 January 2015. A total of 14 special stages run on asphalt, ice and snow. A special stage had to be canceled due to the high number of spectators.

Reports

Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena in the Citroën DS3 WRC at the 2015 Monte Carlo Rally

Day 1 (Thursday, January 22nd)

The first special stage of the 2015 Monte Carlo Rally caused a surprise. Record world champion Sébastien Loeb (Citroën) won this ahead of Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen). Loeb drove the 21-kilometer special at the season opener half a minute faster than the current two-time world champion. Ogier was the first to take the exam. The streets were partly covered with snow and ice. Ott Tänak (Ford) started twelfth and was 8.9 seconds faster than Ogier. Loeb was then 22 seconds faster than Tänak. Thus, after the first test, Loeb was ahead of Tänak and Ogier. The road conditions were a little better in the second special stage, because the asphalt was only wet, there was no snow or ice like in special stage one. As a result, the disadvantage of the first-time riders was less. In SS2, Ogier's time was not beaten by any driver. Loeb lost 17.6 seconds and finished third behind Jari-Matti Latvala (Volkswagen). After the first day, Loeb led the overall standings by 13.3 seconds over Ogier. Latvala was 36.1 seconds back in third. Tänak was around 39 seconds off Loeb. He was in fourth place.

Day 2 (Friday, January 23)

The nine-time world champion Sébastien Loeb slipped off the road on an icy section in the seventh special stage. The Citroën hit the left rear wheel and the suspension was damaged. Loeb had to drive slowly to the finish. He lost six minutes to Ogier and the duel between the world champions was over. Ott Tänak was the best Ford driver in fourth. He was already 2:44 minutes behind Ogier. The only remaining Citroën in the top field was Mads Østberg in fifth after the Loebs accident . The Norwegian was already missing more than three minutes. Kris Meeke (Citroën) retired from SS8 due to a broken wheel suspension. The Citroën drivers started again on Saturday in accordance with the Rally 2 regulations . In the overall standings, Ogier was ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen , all in Volkswagen.

3rd day (Saturday, January 24th)

The third day turned out a little shorter than planned, although the longest special stage of almost 52 kilometers was on the program. The first special stage of the day had to be canceled in the morning because too many spectators had gathered at the roadside in the last section. The organizer could not guarantee the safety for the drivers and the people who had traveled. Then the other three special stages went through the day as planned. Sébastien Ogier lost a minute of his lead over Jari-Matti Latvala during the day . The reigning world champion did not take any risks on partly icy roads. Andreas Mikkelsen is still third, because the approaching Citroën works driver Mads Østberg had technical problems in the 12 special stage that the mechanics could only find in the service park. On Saturday, the Gap service park moved back to the Principality of Monaco . Robert Kubica (Ford) was very fast, just like the day before, but this time there were no incidents (slip-ups) as on the first two days of the rally. Kubica drove the best time in SS10 (over 51 km), was only 1.8 seconds slower than Loeb in SS11 and also finished second in SS12. If only the times from Saturday were scored, Kubica would lead in the overall standings. On the evening of the third day, the former Formula 1 driver was in 13th place. Sébastien Loeb reported back with the best time in SS11, but lost time again on SS12 due to an incorrect tire choice. Overall, Loeb was able to improve to ninth place. Kris Meeke set the fastest time in SS12 and was tenth. So far there has been little to see from Hyundai, Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo drove a solid rally with little risk. At the end of the day, Sordo was fifth and Neuville was sixth.

4th day (Sunday, January 25th)

The Monte Carlo Rally was the duel between Sébastien Ogier and Sébastien Loeb , which was expected to be a one-off comeback for Citroën. Loeb took the lead on Thursday evening and had a close duel with Ogier on Friday. In SS8, however, the nine-time world champion damaged his left rear wheel and the duel was over. From Saturday the way was clear for Volkswagen for a one-two-three. At the finish, Ogier was 58 seconds ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala and over two minutes on Andreas Mikkelsen . Loeb drove again on Saturday according to the rally 2 regulations and finished eighth in the final classification. Loeb won a total of five special tests. The best Citroën driver to finish was Mads Østberg in fourth, despite engine problems. The Hyundai team duel for fifth place was exciting. Dani Sordo was a little slower than Thierry Neuville on the power stage and had to give up fifth place to his team-mate. At the finish, the duo was separated by just 0.8 seconds. For Neuville it was the very first finish in Monte Carlo ever. Robert Kubica underpinned his basic speed with four best times, but there were more incidents. The Ford driver flew off the track on Saturday. On Sunday the rally was finally over for Kubica due to another accident. After crossing the finish line on SS14, he crashed into a wall because the brakes failed.

“It was a great rally. My mistake was of course disappointing, but I was very happy and enjoyed the rally. "

WRC2

Stéphane Lefebvre (Citroën DS3) won with a margin of 2: 14.0 minutes, but that sounds clearer than it really was during the course of the rally. Lefebvre and Martin Koci were practically inseparable until the drive shaft broke on Koci's Ford Fiesta on Saturday afternoon. After that, Lefebvre drove to his first win without mistakes. Craig Breen (Peugeot 208) overtook Armin Kremer (Škoda Fabia) and secured second place, while Eric Camilli (Ford Fiesta) came fourth. Jonathan Hirschi (Peugeot 208) and Quentin Giordano (Citroën DS3) complete the top six.
