The 3rd WRC Rally Poland started on July 2nd and ended on July 5th, 2015. A total of 19 special stages were driven on gravel.

Reports

1st day (Thursday, July 2nd)

The 72nd edition of the Poland Rally , the third as a world championship round of the WRC , began with a spectator-friendly first special stage in the Mikolajki Arena. The drivers competed in pairs in a direct duel on the 2.5-kilometer circuit. Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) drove against world champion Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) in the last duel of the day. Ogier was faster and won the first special stage. Thus the world champion took over the overall lead. Ogier prevented local Robert Kubica (Ford), who had been fastest up until then, from winning the special stage .

2nd day (Friday, July 3rd)

As world championship leader, Sébastien Ogier had to go first to the second special stage. Because of the loose gravel on the roads, he couldn't go as fast as the following competition. He fell behind Ott Tänak (Ford) and his team-mate Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen). In the afternoon, when the special stages were run for the second time, the loose gravel was mostly off the roads and Ogier was much faster. Tänak set the fastest time in special stages three, four and five and took over the overall lead from Mikkelsen. Ogier secured the best time in specials six and seven and took the lead, which he did not give up until the evening. Tänak had made a mistake in choosing tires that afternoon and had to let the three Volkswagen drivers Ogier, Mikkelsen and Jari-Matti Latvala go.

Between the two Hyundai drivers Hayden Paddon and Thierry Neuville , Robert Kubica (Ford) came in sixth.

The loser of the day was Citroën. Mads Østberg couldn't find a rhythm and ended the day more than a minute behind the top in tenth place. He couldn't explain the great time differences between his drives in the various special stages. Kris Meeke had no confidence after yesterday's rollover in the shakedown and was given the task of getting the car to the finish line. Meek was placed eighth at the end of the day.

3rd day (Saturday 4th July)

The leading Sébastien Ogier kept the lead on Saturday that he had claimed since the seventh special stage. Ogier was the first to go to the special stages, like on Friday, but in the evening he still had a lead of 5.6 seconds over team-mate Andreas Mikkelsen . Mikkelsen chose the wrong tire compound in the 14th special stage, otherwise first place would have been possible. M-Sport driver Ott Tänak , who fought against the competition for the first time with the redesigned Ford Fiesta RS WRC , was able to maintain third place. Tänak lost a few seconds due to a spin, but set three best times during the day. He won the battle for third and fourth place with Jari-Matti Latvala on the third day of the rally.

Hayden Paddon is still in good shape. In fifth place, the New Zealander is the best Hyundai driver just under a minute behind Ogier. Paddon kept teammate Thierry Neuville behind him by 20 seconds. Behind the two Hyundai, Robert Kubica follows in seventh place. The Pole has to orient himself backwards on Sunday, because the Citroën duo Østberg and Meeke followed in eighth and ninth place, just a few seconds behind. The first four drivers are separated from each other by less than 20 seconds after 17 of 19 special stages.

A total of eight special stages were on the program, seven of which could be driven. The 14th "Mazury 2" special stage, the first in the afternoon, had to be canceled because too many spectators had gathered around the track and some of them were in forbidden zones.

4th day (Sunday, July 5th)

Ott Tänak and Ragio Mölder (M-Sport Ford) at the 2015 Rally Poland

In the fastest rally of the previous World Championship in 2015 (average speed 121.4 km / h), Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) and co-driver Julien Ingrassia had to remain absolutely flawless until the finish line, in the end their teammates Andreas Mikkelsen and Ola Fløne by just 11.9 seconds to beat. Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila (Volkswagen) fought a duel with Ott Tänak and Raigo Mölder (Ford) for third place. After a slip in a tree, Latvala finished the rally in fifth and Tänak in third. Hayden Paddon with co-driver John Kennard finished fourth as best Hyundai driver.

“That was the first rally where we were really competitive. It was difficult at the beginning of the season. I had a year off and this year the WRC just keeps getting better and better. Portugal was okay, then I was eliminated third in Sardinia. Here we are on the podium. That means a lot to me."

WRC2

Esapekka Lappi ( Škoda Fabia R5) took the lead on Friday's second special stage and did not give it up until the end on Sunday. After almost 300 special stages over the sandy roads in northern Poland, Lappi won 56.1 seconds ahead of his teammate Pontus Tidemand . Lappi and Tidemand each won seven special stages. Karl Kruuda won three sections and took third place overall in the Citroën DS3 R5 . Jari Ketomaa's race to catch up ended in fourth position. He had numerous problems with the Ford Fiesta R5 on Friday, but fought his way back to the top ranks as the rally progressed. With that, Ketomaa took back the lead in the championship from the failed Nasser Al-Attiyah . Armin Kremer finished fifth in another Fabia R5, followed by Teemu Suninen (Fabia S2000), who achieved his best career result in sixth.
