The 51st Rally of Catalonia (also called Rally Catalonia Spain ) took place from October 22nd to 25th, 2015. A total of 23 special stages were driven on asphalt and gravel.

background

The route

The rally was driven on mixed surfaces, partly on asphalt and gravel. The largely revised route mainly led through the hilly landscape of Tarragona . Seven new special stages increased the number to 23.

The start took place on Thursday evening with a road special test in the Montjuïc region , which used to be the venue for the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Spain , near Barcelona . On Friday, the first part was mainly on gravel roads, then on asphalt. On Saturday and Sunday there were only special stages on asphalt on the program. The asphalt sections were partly circular in character. A short, spectator-friendly special stage of 2.24 kilometers led through the city center of Salou .

Set up

On Friday, the cars needed an asphalt and gravel setup. The cars had to be converted during the service hours. Tires were necessary for both asphalt and gravel roads. The tire wear was generally high for the whole rally.

World Championship

Since both the team and the drivers' world championships were decided at the Rally Australia , the rally Catalonia was mainly about winning the world championship run. The teams from Citroën and Hyundai fought for second place in the team world championship.

Reports

Andreas Mikkelsen and Ola Fløne in the Polo R WRC

Day 1 (Thursday, October 22nd)

The Rally Spain started with a spectator-friendly special stage in downtown Barcelona. There was a tricky course 1.6 kilometers to lap twice. Sébastien Ogier set the fastest time . At the wheel of the Volkswagen Polo R WRC , the world champion covered the two laps at the foot of Montjuic in 3: 37.8 minutes. After Thierry Neuville had initially held first place in the Hyundai i20 WRC , Ogier, who was the last to go out on the track, snatched the fastest time from him and relegated him to second place by 2.1 seconds.

Day 2 (Friday, October 23)

After a total of nine special stages, Sébastien Ogier held the lead, but only four seconds ahead of team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala . In the meantime, the rally was led by two other drivers, Robert Kubica (Ford) and Jari-Matti Latvala (Volkswagen). Kubica took the lead on the third special stage, he lost the lead two stages later due to an accident and a puncture and lost five minutes. After Kubica had said goodbye to the battle for the top, Ott Tänak came third in the M-Sport-Ford behind Ogier and Latvala. Tänak won the special stages four, six and eight. Latvala took the overall lead on the sixth SS, but lost the top position again to Ogier on the last stage of the day (SS9).

3rd day (Saturday, October 24th)

Sébastien Ogier clearly won the first three special stages of the day and increased the lead over the competition. Ogier set the pace and won five of the eight special stages on the third day of the rally. In addition, the pursuers did not remain flawless, which brought Ogier additional time savings. In the 11th special stage, Ott Tänak lost third place when he brushed the edge of the road and tore off his left front wheel. Jari-Matti Latvala ran over a large stone in a curve, resulting in a flat tire and a damaged rim. Dani Sordo (Hyundai) and Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen) could not keep Latvala behind them and in the evening Latvala was back in second place. Mikkelsen followed in third, 2.9 seconds back, rounding off a three-way lead for Volkswagen. The local Sordo was fourth, another 4.5 seconds behind.

4th day (Sunday, October 25th)

Sébastien Ogier had the Rally Spain under control for long stretches, but on the final power stage he had an accident 3.8 kilometers from the finish. The beneficiary was team mate Andreas Mikkelsen , who celebrated his first overall victory in the top class of the World Rally Championship (WRC). Mikkelsen, who completed the power stage faster than his direct opponent Jari-Matti Latvala , wanted to be pleased that he had caught Latvala in the fight for second place at the last moment when the news of Ogier's accident reached him. Ogier could no longer think of a trip to the finish line, as a front wheel broke from the suspension in the accident.

Dani Sordo , who started fourth on Sunday, lost time on the last six stages of the rally, but still managed to get on the podium due to the Ogier accident. Citroën drivers Mads Østberg and Kris Meeke finished the rally 1.9 seconds apart in fourth and fifth place. The first ten places were completed by Hayden Paddon (Hyundai), Martin Prokop (Czech-Ford), Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) and the WRC2 drivers Pontus Tidemand and Jan Kopecký (both Škoda Fabia R5).

WRC2

Pontus Tidemand took over the leadership of Nasser Al-Attiyah on Friday and did not give it up afterwards. Tidemand ultimately prevailed with a 10.7 second lead over his Škoda Fabia R5 team-mate Jan Kopecký . Third place was enough for Al-Attiyah to win his second WRC2 world title in a row before the season finale in Great Britain. Al-Attiyah was attacked by Armin Kremer (Škoda Fabia R5), who was able to reduce his deficit to just a tenth of a second before the last special stage. After the final section was canceled because of Ogier's accident, Al-Attiyah was already world champion. Al-Attiyah crossed the finish line almost four minutes behind Kopecký. Yuriy Protasov (Ford Fiesta RRC) and Jaroslaw Koltun (Fiesta RRC) filled the top six places. Before the rally, Tidemand was the big outsider among the six drivers who still had mathematical hopes for the title. However, on Sunday Tidemand was the last remaining driver who could have postponed the championship decision.
