The 58th Rallye Corsica (also called Rallye France or Tour de Corse ) took place from October 2nd to 4th, 2015. A total of 7 special stages were driven on asphalt. Due to heavy rain on Friday and Saturday, 2 special stages had to be canceled.
Reports
Day 1 (Friday, October 2nd)
Heavy rain caused disabilities on the first day of the rally. The second special stage had to be canceled. The second run of the same stage on Saturday, SS 4, was canceled on Friday evening. The streets were partially flooded. Thus, only two special stages were run on Friday and after them M-Sport Ford driver Elfyn Evans was in the lead. With Kevin Abbring (Hyundai), only one other driver was able to keep up Evans' pace. After the first day, he finished second in the overall standings, 18.7 seconds behind Evans.
World champion Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) won the first special stage at the same time as Robert Kubica (Ford). Ogier also set the fastest intermediate time in the third special stage, but then stopped after 25.6 kilometers and lost around one and a half minutes because of a flat tire. At the end of the day, Ogier was tenth overall. The best Volkswagen driver in the overall standings was Jari-Matti Latvala in third place, 22.9 seconds behind Evans. The best Citroën driver was Mads Østberg in fourth place, 38.8 seconds behind.
Day 2 (Saturday, October 3rd)
Volkswagen had taken first and third place on the second day of the rally. Jari-Matti Latvala made up almost 25 seconds on the only two special stages on Saturday and thus two positions. The current runner-up in the World Rally Championship table took over the narrow lead from Elfyn Evans (M-Sport-Ford) with a lead of just two seconds. Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen) made up just under 16 seconds on the day's 84 kilometers and went from seventh to third.
Sébastien Ogier was unable to catch up on Saturday. After the old and new world champions lost over 1:40 minutes on Friday with a creeping puncture, he had to change the gearbox at noon after problems. This resulted in a ten-minute penalty. When he returned under the Rally 2 regulations , Ogier won the longest sixth special stage at 48.46 kilometers.
3rd day (Sunday, October 4th)
Jari-Matti Latvala could not miss the third win of the season on Sunday. The success story for Volkswagen was completed by Andreas Mikkelsen , who was third who achieved the 22nd podium result this season. Team mate Sébastien Ogier finished the difficult home rally with the ninth win of the power stage in the current season in 15th place.
By winning the third special stage on Friday, Elfyn Evans took the lead in the rally that he almost maintained on Saturday. Evans started the final day just two seconds behind Latvala and took second place ahead of Mikkelsen.
The two regular Hyundai drivers Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo experienced a problematic weekend . Neuville only got a mile on Friday before hitting a bridge with his right rear wheel, damaging the suspension and being eliminated. After the restart under the rally 2 regulations , the Belgian crossed the finish line in 21st place overall. Sordo lost a good two minutes on Friday due to a tire damage, which he could not make up in the further course of the rally despite the fastest time on the eighth special stage. In the end, Sordo was classified in seventh place. As a result, Hyundai suffered a setback in the battle for second place in the manufacturers' championship, where Citroën is now one point ahead again. Kevin Abbring was in the Hyundai in the meantime in second place overall after a strong Friday. On the final day he was still on course for a result in the top five, but he got off the road on the penultimate special stage and retired. Team-mate Hayden Paddon was fifth after having dropped back to 15th with technical problems on the first day.
WRC2
Julien Maurin (Ford Fiesta RRC) took the lead on Saturday morning and was 19.0 seconds ahead of Esapekka Lappi (Škoda Fabia R5) by the evening . In the first special stage on Sunday, Maurin more than doubled his lead, then adjusted his pace and ultimately won with a 20.9 second lead. Lappi had to admit that he couldn't keep up with Maurin. However, finishing second meant he improved to second in the championship, nine points behind Nasser Al-Attiyah . In third place, Armin Kremer (Škoda Fabia R5) retired due to an accident on the first special stage on Sunday morning. This brought Eric Camilli (Ford Fiesta R5) to the podium. Camilli was 3:20 minutes behind Lappi at the finish. Craig Breen , who led to a puncture, overtook Teemu Suninen on Sunday and finished fourth in a Peugeot 208 T16, 6.8 seconds behind Camilli. With Jonathan Hirschi, another Peugeot 208 T16 completed the first six placings.
