The Corsica Rally , officially Tour de Corse , is a rally on the French island of Corsica . It was the French round of the World Rally Championship from 1973 to 2008 and has been again since 2015.

history

The Corsica Rally was first held in 1956. The name Tour de Corse comes from the early days of the event, when the route ran around the entire island. From 1973 it was part of the World Rally Championship . In 1985 the Italian Attilio Bettega and in 1986 the Finn Henri Toivonen died together with his US co-driver Sergio Cresto in the Corsica Rally . This led to the banishment of the sophisticated Group B vehicles from the World Rally Championship. From the mid-1980s, the distance of the Corsica Rally was reduced further and further from the previous 1000 kilometers. With an interruption in 1996, the rally was part of the World Rally Championship every year until 2008. The special stages were last driven in the region around Ajaccio . The Tour de Corse has been part of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge calendar since 2011 . The rally will now be held again as a tour around a larger part of the island.

The return of the WRC

After Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena retired from the World Rally Championship , Loeb comes from Alsace and the number of spectators in Alsace decreased noticeably in 2014 , the rally was again awarded to Corsica in 2015 .

Characteristic

The special stages lead exclusively on paved, winding mountain roads. The rally is therefore called the rally of 10,000 corners . The average speed is also relatively low because of the narrow lane width. The roads are partly dusty, which is also due to the fact that the curves have to be cut frequently to drive fast. The asphalt is rough and in some places is in poor condition. This creates a high level of tire wear and the risk of tire damage.

Overall winner

The record winners of the Tour de Corse are Bernard Darniche and Didier Auriol with six wins each.
