The 35th Rally Argentina was the 4th round of the 2015 World Rally Championship . It lasted from April 23 to April 26, 2015. A total of 12 special stages were driven on gravel.

Reports

Day 1 (Thursday, April 23)

Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) needed a time of 2: 32.0 minutes for the first special stage of 2.68 kilometers. The reigning double world champion was 0.2 seconds faster than his team-mate Andreas Mikkelsen and Citroën driver Kris Meeke , who both finished second. The spectator test, which was held 75 percent on asphalt and 25 percent on gravel, was part of the rally for the first time and had to be lapped twice (circuit).

Day 2 (Friday, April 24th)

Harsh conditions with lots of stones on the route and numerous water crossings challenged people and materials. In addition, there had been a lot of rain in Argentina before the rally and the gravel roads were washed out and hard in the ground. Friday claimed many prominent victims. Sébastien Ogier had to park the Polo on the first special stage of the day shortly before the finish with engine problems. But the other Volkswagen drivers didn't fare much better either. Andreas Mikkelsen parked his car early because of a defective steering and Jari-Matti Latvala struggled with transmission problems. Also Ott Tanak (Ford), Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) and Lorenzo Bertelli (Ford) had to give up. The failed ones are planning a restart on Saturday under the rally 2 regulations . Various drivers had punctures during the day, but were able to finish all planned special stages. Mads Østberg (Citroën), who had complained about engine problems in the morning, drove in second place until the end of the day. For once, the second Citroën driver Kris Meeke was spared all difficulties . He took over a minute from the entire competition. Latvala was third and Dani Sordo , the best Hyundai driver, fourth.

3rd day (Saturday, April 25th)

Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle (Citroën DS3 WRC)

Hayden Paddon had an accident shortly after the start of the ninth special stage. Paddon's Hyundai came, after jumping over a knoll, in an inclined position and flew off the road. Six spectators were involved in the accident. They were immediately taken care of by rescue workers from the rally. The driver and front passenger were uninjured. The special stage was canceled.

Kris Meeke (Citroën) goes into the final day of the rally as the leader. After Meeke had lost some of his lead over team-mate Mads Østberg in the morning , he took six seconds from him in the last four special stages of Saturday, despite a problem after driving through water. Sensors reacted and delivered error messages to the car, so Meeke had to switch off the engine and restart it. Meeke starts Sunday with a lead of 38.5 seconds, with two special stages on the program. Østberg, who suffers from flu, primarily wants to secure second place on Sunday. Jari-Matti Latvala (Volkswagen) is in third place, over a minute behind, followed by Elfyn Evans (Ford).

4th day (Sunday, April 26th)

Kris Meeke (Citroën) remained sovereign in Argentina and managed his lead skillfully on Sunday. At the finish he was 18.1 seconds ahead of team-mate Mads Østberg . For Meeke it was the first victory in the WRC . At the same time, a Briton won the World Rally Championship for the first time since 2002. Back then, legend Colin McRae , who discovered Meeke and promoted his career, won the Safari Rally . M-Sport and Elfyn Evans (Ford) also had reason to celebrate . The young Brit showed a solid performance in Argentina and, unlike many of his rivals, crossed the finish line without major mistakes or technical problems. He was rewarded with third place and stood on the podium for the first time in his WRC career. Fourth was the privateer Martin Prokop , another Ford driver. For Volkswagen , the rally was disappointing from the start. All three cars struggled with technical problems.

“This year I had my difficulties reaching the goal without making mistakes. My speed was good, but I definitely had to improve. "

WRC2

Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari (Ford) did not win a single special stage of the four-day gravel rally, but in the end he was still at the top of the final classification in the WRC2 class. With a lead of 2: 48.5 minutes he won ahead of Diego Dominguez (Ford) from Paraguay. Yuriy Protasov (Ford) fell back on Friday due to a suspension damage on the Ford Fiesta RRC . Because Protasov drove with only three wheels on an overpass road between two special stages, there was an additional penalty of 15 minutes. The Ukrainian then won eleven of twelve special stages and came fourth. Jari Ketomaa (Ford) crossed the finish line in third place on the podium, ahead of Protasov . Ketomaa was more than twelve minutes behind Al-Kuwari after a defective power steering and a tire damage, but was able to maintain its lead in the WRC2 World Championship with 18 points. Simone Tempestini (Subaru) lost seven minutes on the last SS due to problems with the steering and dropped from fourth to sixth place.
