Christian Ludwig Schimmelpfennig von der Oye (born March 9, 1738 in Prussia, † June 21, 1812 in Sielec near Sosnowice ) was a Prussian major general and chief of the 6th Hussar Regiment . As a commander he had shaped the Hussar Regiment No. 9 (also: "Towarczys" or "Bosniak Corps"), was a good horse connoisseur and therefore bought horses for Frederick II several times in Russia and Poland.

His parents were the Prussian Landjägermeister and heir to Rutow and Dietrichswalde Hans Schimmelpfennig von der Oye (1700–1760) and his wife Marie Luise, née von Pommeau. He had four brothers: Philipp († 1815), colonel and commander of the Towarzy; Heinrich († 1802), one fell near Liegnitz , a second near Leuthen .

Military career

He came to Infantry Regiment No. 14 as a musketeer on February 1, 1756 . In the Seven Years War he fought near Groß-Jägersdorf , Kay , Kunersdorf and Freiberg . In anger the village he was wounded. He also took part in the battle of Strehlen and in the siege of Dresden and in the battle of Anklam, where he was wounded. At that time he came in 1760 in the Dragoon Regiment of the Freikorps "Kleist".

After the war he was on May 22, 1766 Second Lieutenant in Hussar Regiment No. 6 and on May 24, 1770 he was Prime Lieutenant in the "Bosniaks" Hussar Regiment. On November 25, 1770 he was already staff assistant master there . On August 14, 1774, he became captain and squadron chief and took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession as such in 1778/79 . On May 16, 1786 he was promoted to major and on January 11, 1787, he received recognition and renewal of his nobility. On January 28, 1788, he became the commander of the second battalion of the regiment. There he became lieutenant colonel on January 17, 1793 . In the Polish campaign of 1794/95 he fought near Kolno and was wounded in the battle near Magnuszewo . For Kolno he received the order Pour le Mérite on July 13, 1794 . On November 11, 1794, he was promoted to colonel , and on October 9, 1797, he was also commander of the regiment. On August 17, 1799 he was then also head of the regiment. Then, on May 20, 1800, he was promoted to major general by patent dated May 27, 1800.

He took part in the Fourth Coalition War and was the leader of a corps that was supposed to cover the withdrawal of the Hohenlohe corps. He was supposed to prevent the French from crossing the Havel at Zehdenick on October 26, 1806 , but lost the battle despite material superiority. He returned home seriously ill and asked for his farewell. This was denied to him, however, because the king wanted a review of what happened at Zehdenick. General Bülow was entrusted with the investigation . On January 25, 1807 he had to surrender his regiment. Its commander, Prince Ferdinand von Anhalt-Köthen-Pless, took his place . He died on June 21, 1812 without the court martial being brought to an end.

In 1772 he married Johanna Elisabeth Schimmelpfenning von der Oye (* October 3, 1754, † July 5, 1827) from the Niebudzen family. The couple had several children including:
