The 49th Rally Portugal took place from May 21 to 24, 2015. A total of 16 special stages were driven on gravel.

background

New route

The Rally Portugal returned to the north of Portugal for the first time since 2001 and took place in Matosinhos near Porto . On Thursday afternoon, the opening ceremony in Guimarães took place with an autograph session for all drivers, followed by an evening "Super Special Stage", which is particularly spectator-friendly, on the rallycross circuit in Lousada . The first full day of the rally took the drivers further north to the area of Ponte de Lima near the Spanish border. The special stages on Saturday were the longest of the rally (SS 10 and 13 with 37.62 kilometers) and were driven south near Amarante . Three special stages were held on Sunday, with the focus on the classic special stage “Fafe”, which was completed twice. The second run of the special stage was considered a power stage .

Challenge

All drivers and their co-drivers had to create completely new notes before the rally. The preparation (recce) was therefore of great importance. Before the first special stage, the mechanics were required to fine-tune the cars because there was a lack of experience. The ideal setup for gravel roads was sought.

Modified cars at the start

The redesigned Fiesta RS WRC looks almost the same as the current model. Under the hood, the car has been modified to 80 percent. The M-Sport engineers further developed the 1.6-liter engine and made changes to the engine compartment, radiator position, intercooler, transmission, electronics, wiring and differentials. M-Sport drivers Elfyn Evans and Ott Tänak drove around 5000 test kilometers in the modified Fiesta RS WRC. M-Sport customers Lorenzo Bertelli (FWRT), Martin Prokop from the Jipocar Czech National Team and Robert Kubica (RK World Rally Team) were allowed to test the car and also received the revised vehicle for Rally Portugal. Team boss Malcom Wilson expects regular podium places from the modified car.

From the Rally Portugal onwards, the French works team Citroën will use a revised version of the DS3 WRC for drivers Kris Meeke , Mads Østberg and Khalid Al Qassimi . For the 60th birthday of the group, the car was given a new paint job in gray and black. Each of the three drivers has their own roof color. White with Kris Meeke, gray with Mads Østberg and Khalid Al Qassimi get a red paint job. The new front section is intended to significantly increase the car's aerodynamic efficiency and increase downforce. There was also a new rear wing and a new rear suspension. The engine upgrade package is the second this season. A new engine was installed for the Monte Carlo Rally . This was revised again and derived from the unit of the C-Elysee used in the World Touring Car Championship .

Reports

Day 1 (Thursday, May 21)

The shakedown for the Rally Portugal was scheduled for early Thursday morning. Around 40 kilometers from the rally headquarters in Matosinhos , a 4.63 kilometer gravel track was prepared on which the final settings on the cars could be tested. Andreas Mikkelsen drove the current 2015 version of the Polo R WRC for the first time this season . Mikkelsen set the best time of 3: 11.3 minutes. Teammates Sébastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala followed behind . Mads Østberg overturned 500 meters after the start with the Citroën DS3 WRC . He was still able to take part in the first special test.

Over 30,000 spectators watched the first special stage in Lousada on a rally-cross course of 3.6 kilometers in length. The 25-year-old Andreas Mikkelsen prevailed against the competition in the Superspecial and took the lead in the overall standings. Mikkelsen's lead over world champion Sébastien Ogier was only half a second. After this short show test, the first 20 drivers were within ten seconds. On Friday the cars will start the special stages after the World Cup stand. For world champion Ogier, this means a clear disadvantage on the gravel roads.

Day 2 (Friday, May 22nd)

Jari-Matti Latvala made the best use of starting position nine, as the cars that started before him drove the gravel roads "cleanly". The Finn took the lead in the fourth special stage and did not relinquish it until the evening. Latvala was able to pull out a lead of 11.1 seconds over Kris Meeke in the afternoon . Citroën had made a mistake in choosing tires that afternoon.

As the world championship leader, Sébastien Ogier had to go first to the special stages and lost time. A puncture in the morning made the gap even bigger. Overall, the Frenchman was 25.9 seconds short of Latvala after the first day.

Dani Sordo ( Hyundai i20 WRC ) led the overall class after setting the fastest time in the second special stage. All three Hyundai drivers had problems with the tires and lost a lot of time in the following special stages. Sordo finished the day in fifth and Hayden Paddon in eighth. Thierry Neuville was ninth, 1: 08.0 minutes behind the leader. The best Ford driver after seven special stages was Ott Tänak in fourth place.

On Friday morning, a vehicle ahead burned out completely on SS2. As it is very dry in Portugal, an embankment caught fire. In the afternoon the second run of the special stage "Ponte de Lima" (SS5) had to be canceled.

3rd day (Saturday, May 23rd)

Two Volkswagen were in a promising position before the final 54.65 kilometers on Sunday in the battle for overall victory. Jari-Matti Latvala was leading with 9.5 seconds ahead of Sébastien Ogier and 20 seconds ahead of Kris Meeke (Citroën), who was harassed by Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen). The determining topic on the third day of the rally was the choice of tires. While Ogier and Latvala opted for a mixture of hard and soft tires in the morning and afternoon, Mikkelsen only chose the soft version in the morning. By the evening, double world champion Ogier made up 16.4 seconds on leader Latvala and won four positions. Mikkelsen will race for third place against Meeke on Sunday and try to catch up with the British. The gap was only 1.1 seconds on Saturday evening.

4th day (Sunday, May 24th)

Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila (Volkswagen Polo R WRC)

On the final day of the rally, Jari-Matti Latvala , Sebastien Ogier and Andreas Mikkelsen made it a one- two- three for Volkswagen. Latvala took the lead on Friday and never gave it up until the finish. It was exciting until the end, Latvala's lead was only 8.2 seconds after the last special stage. Mikkelsen passed Kris Meeke and secured third place.

M-Sport could n't keep up with Volkswagen and Citroën with the redesigned Ford Fiesta RS WRC . Ott Tänak finished fifth, just under two minutes behind. Elfyn Evans retired on Friday with a technical defect and on Saturday after a driving error.

Dani Sordo (Hyundai) did not find the right driving rhythm and had to be content with sixth place. Sordo was able to keep Mads Østberg at a distance of 4.3 seconds on Sunday . Thierry Neuville retired on Saturday after a rollover accident. Hayden Paddon finished eighth with the third i20 WRC .

In the drivers' world championship, Ogier is 42 points ahead of Mikkelsen, who overtook Østberg.

“After the last rallies, some people doubted whether I would come back. It was the worst of my career. That's why it's unique to come here and win. I really appreciate this win. "
