report

Thierry Neuville won the 2020 Monte Carlo Rally

Thierry Neuville ( Hyundai ) won the 2020 Monte Carlo Rally. He also set the fastest time on the Power Stage and was credited with the maximum number of 30 points at the start of the season. On the last special stage, Neuville drove to a tenth of a second as fast as Sébastien Ogier , but was ahead in the hundredths of a second in the more precise internal measurement. This ended the winning streak of Ogier, who had won the Monte Carlo Rally six times in a row for three different manufacturers (Volkswagen, Citroën and Ford) since 2014. The Frenchman drove for Toyota WRT for the first time in the 2020 season after Citroën left the factory team at the end of the 2019 season. For Neuville it was the 13th WRC victory, for Hyundai the 14th triumph in the World Rally Championship .

In 2020 the “Monte” presented itself in terms of weather pleasantly in contrast to other years. Only during the special stages on Saturday were the roads a little icy. Otherwise, the winter tires with spikes stayed on the shelf, and the Col du Turini pass road on the final day did not pose a major challenge for the drivers. Nevertheless, or perhaps because of it, the rally was sporty and exciting and fought over on all four days. After an early lead from Neuville, the two Toyota drivers Elfyn Evans and Sébastien Ogier set the pace on Friday . With best times in all three special stages on Friday morning, Evans initially took the lead, which Ogier wrested from him by the evening.

Neuville, however, always stayed within striking distance and mostly drove faster than the competition on Saturday. The Belgian won three of the four special stages. The leading trio Evans, Ogier and Neuville started the final day just 6.4 seconds apart. Evans, who started Sunday as the leader but ultimately finished third, was not entirely satisfied after his first rally for Toyota despite the podium .

For the reigning world champion Ott Tänak , the new season began with a serious accident. On Friday the Estonian came off the road at high speed on the fourth special stage. Tänak and co-driver Martin Järveoja survived the terrible departure unharmed, but had to spend a night in the hospital for observation.
