report

The 2019 season opener at the Monte Carlo Rally was extremely exciting. After 16 special stages in sometimes very difficult conditions, the decision was not made until the last special stage. In the end, Sébastien Ogier (Citroën) was in the lead by just 2.2 seconds after a thrilling duel with Thierry Neuville (Hyundai). Third was Ott Tänak (Toyota). By winning on his first start after returning to Citroën, Ogier cemented his reputation as “Mr. Monte Carlo », he wins this rally six times in a row with three different cars (Volkswagen, Ford and Citroën). But the Frenchman didn't have to fight for victory as hard as this year. Until the last special stage, Thierry Neuville was only a few seconds behind. On the penultimate special stage, Neuville came within 0.4 seconds of Ogier, who was handicapped by a temporarily jammed gas pedal. But on the last special stage (power stage), the six-time world champion played his whole class, drove 1.8 seconds faster than Neuville and won again.

Tanak (Toyota) made a strong impression. The fact that, despite victories in seven of the 15 special stages (SS), it was not enough for more than third place was due to a tire damage on Friday that caused the Estonian to lose more than two minutes. After that, he set the fastest time in six special stages in a row on Saturday and Sunday.

After a long break in the WRC, Sébastien Loeb also competed again. He contested six selected competitions for Hyundai in 2019. Loeb was satisfied, as he showed a strong performance with the Hyundai i20 WRC after only two days of testing. After a courageous tire choice on Friday, he won two special stages and at the end of the day came fourth in the overall ranking. Only that he and co-driver Daniel Elena did not reach the podium on the final day bothered the record world champion (nine world titles) a little. "At our first rally with Hyundai fourth, that's not so bad," he said in an interview.
