The 39th Rally Argentina was the fifth round of the FIA - World Rally Championship 2019 . It lasted from April 25th to 28th, 2019. A total of 18 special stages were planned on gravel, the third special stage had to be canceled due to heavy rain.

report

The Argentina Rally, which was characterized by heavy rainfall, caused problems for many drivers. Thierry Neuville (Hyundai), however, got through the three days without any damage. After taking the lead in the eighth special stage, the Belgian drove confidently to victory.

Neuville's pursuers were led by Andreas Mikkelsen , who achieved a Hyundai double success with second place and was able to climb onto the podium for the first time since the 2018 Rally Sweden.

Third place went to Sébastien Ogier (Citroën), after narrowly beating Kris Meeke (Toyota) despite the power steering damage. Meeke got a time penalty of 10 seconds because he had left the prescribed route in SS11. In the overall standings, the Briton temporarily dropped from third to fifth place due to the time penalty.

For Elfyn Evans (Ford), the journey was over on the tenth special stage. In a long right curve, the Welshman caught a rock on the inside. This levered out the Fiesta WRC, which then overturned. Evans and co-driver Scott Martin survived the accident unharmed.

Ott Tänaks (Toyota) stopped in the 14th SS after about ten kilometers due to a technical defect. At this point the Estonian was Neuville's first pursuer, eleven seconds behind. Even with a restart on Sunday, only points in the power stage would have been realistic for Tänak due to the 14 penalty minutes due for the two unfinished special stages on Saturday.

On Sunday there were three special stages over a total distance of 53.16 kilometers on the program. With "Mina Clavero" and twice "El Condor" , which was also the power stage , the teams expected two classic stages of the Rally Argentina. In the morning crossing, which counted as SS16, Meeke was initially the fastest and thus made up for part of his penalty time. On the subsequent SS17, Neuville extended his lead over Mikkelsen with the fastest time before the rally came to an end with the Powerstage, the second "El Condor" crossing. Ogier drove the fastest time and thus secured the five bonus points. He also fended off the final attack by Meeke, who was fourth, 1.4 seconds behind Ogier. But Ogier couldn't shake Hyundai's double success. The Citroën driver was 16 seconds short of second placed Mikkelsen.
