report

Sébastien Ogier (Citroën) used his starting position three on the first day in the first rally of the season on gravel roads. Ogier put the early leader Andreas Mikkelsen (Hyundai) under pressure. As a result, Mikkelsens drove over a larger stone and a lot, Ogier took the lead after the fifth special stage and only gave it to Kris Meeke (Toyota) briefly after the tenth special stage on Saturday . Ogier had a puncture on the first round of the Guanajuatito SS. Since the test was canceled due to an accident of his teammate Esapekka Lappi and Ogier was assigned a time by the race management, his loss of time was limited. After Kris Meeke suffered a tire damage in the following special stage, the way was clear for Ogier, who from then on drove safely to victory.

With second place, Ott Tänak achieved an important result in the fight for the world title. On Friday, Tänak had to open the first special stage as world championship leader, which is a clear disadvantage in gravel rallies. From Saturday, the Estonian set faster times and came forward while some of his rivals failed. On the final day, the Toyota driver fought his way past Elfyn Evans (Ford) into second place.

With fourth place, Thierry Neuville managed damage control for the bad luck Hyundai team. Neuville already lost more than 40 seconds on the second special stage due to a puncture and was unable to keep up with the pace of the fastest. In the fifth special stage, Mikkelsen, who had been in the lead up until then, drove over a stone, damaging the suspension of his car and making him give up. Before the seventh special stage, Dani Sordo's car had electrical problems. In second place, Sordo had to park his i20 WRC.
