The 69th Rally Finland was the 9th round of the FIA - World Rally Championship 2019 . It lasted from August 1st to 4th, 2019 and a total of 23 special stages were run.

report

As in the past two years, Toyota was in excellent shape at Rally Finland. Ott Tänak and his teammates Kris Meeke and Jari-Matti Latvala set the pace from the start and were ahead on Friday. The only driver who could keep up with the Toyotas was Esapekka Lappi . At his home rally, which he won with Toyota in 2017, the Finn showed his best performance since switching to Citroën and turned the Toyota three-way battle into a four-way battle for the top. It was about every tenth of a second, at times Tänak, Meeke, Latvala and Lappi were separated from each other by just 2.6 seconds. After the eighth special stage, Tänak, Meeke and Lappi were in second place at the same time. At the 14th SS, Toyota lost two contenders for victory in one fell swoop. Latvala and Meeke hit obstacles with their left rear wheel. While Latvala suffered a puncture and lost 14.1 seconds to Tänak, Meeke had to park his Yaris WRC with a broken rear suspension. From then on, Tanak's victory was never in danger. He controlled his lead and celebrated his tenth WRC victory. With second place, Lappi repeated his result at the Rally Sweden and ended a dry spell. After Saturday's mishap, Latvala was focused on bringing home the podium. Although he dared to attack Lappi again on Sunday morning, he couldn't get close to his compatriot. After his retirement on Saturday, Meeke started again under the rally 2 regulations on Sunday , but retired after another departure in SS22.

The fact that Sébastien Ogier missed the podium in Finland was not only due to an upset stomach that weakened him on Saturday. Citroën was unable to keep up with Toyota's pace. So Ogier focused on reaching the destination with a safe journey.

Hyundai brought the Rally Finland no luck in 2019, as it did in the previous year. Once again this season, Thierry Neuville missed the podium of the top three. Andreas Mikkelsen managed better , who won three special stages. One ray of hope was newcomer Craig Breen , who was temporarily the team's best driver on his first WRC start for Hyundai. In the second half of the rally, however, he fell behind. On the final day he let his team-mate Neuville pass and finished the rally in seventh place.
