Amadeus of Savoy (entrepreneur)

Amedeo Umberto Costantino Giorgio Paolo Elena Maria Fiorenzo Zvonimiro di Savoia Aosta (born September 27, 1943 in Florence , † June 1, 2021 in Arezzo ) was an Italian entrepreneur.

Life

Amadeus was the only son of the fourth Duke of Aosta Aimone III. and the Princess Irene of Greece . As Zvonimir II, he was also heir to the throne of the short-lived Kingdom of Croatia (1941–1943).

On July 26, 1944 until the end of the war in May 1945, the Nazis interned Amadeus and his mother with his cousins ​​Margherita and Maria Cristina in Hirschegg according to an order signed by Heinrich Himmler personally .

He was considered head of the House of Savoy by Italian monarchists . According to historical nobility law , he held the titles of 5th Duke of Aosta , Prince of Cisterna and Belriguardo, Marchese di Voghera, Conte di Ponderano . However, titles of nobility are not recognized by the Italian constitution.

Amadeus married Claude Marie Agnès Catherine de Bourbon-Orléans (* 1943) on July 22, 1964 . The relationship resulted in three children:

  • Aimone Umberto Emanuele Filiberto Luigi Amedeo Elena Maria Fiorenzo (* 1967)
  • Mafalda Giovanna (* 1969)

This marriage was divorced and officially declared null and void. In 1987 he married Silvia Paternò Ventimiglia di Spedalotto, who was born in 1954 . There were no children from this marriage.

He also has a daughter Maria Gabriella van Ellinkhuizen, born in 2006, from a relationship with Kyara van Ellinkhuizen, daughter of the painter and engraver Bertus van Ellinkhuizen and the soprano and choirmaster Gabriella Ross.

Amadeus of Savoy was a lover of racing cars. The Italian car manufacturer Bizzarrini built an individual version of the P 538 sports car on his behalf in 1968 , which became known in the classic scene as the Bizzarrini Duca d'Aosta .

For the last few years he lived in Castiglion Fibocchi in Tuscany , where he was an agricultural entrepreneur. He produced the Vini Savoia-Aosta wine brand . In 1996 he was appointed representative of Palermo in the international foundation Pro Herbario Mediterraneo and from 1997 president of the foundation. In 2003 he was appointed chairman of the permanent management committee of the Isola di Vivara nature reserve by the Italian government . He was an honorary citizen of Marigliano , Pantelleria and Abetone .

Amadeus of Savoy died of cardiac arrest in June 2021 at the age of 77 .

Head of the family

The Council of Senators of the Empire, a collegial body founded by the former King Umberto in 1955 to watch over the honor of the House of Savoy, decreed on July 7, 2006 that “Amadeus of Savoy, formerly Duke of Aosta, the rightful Duke of Savoy and head of the House of Savoy is ”.
