Anton Martin Slomšek (born November 26, 1800 in Ponikva near Cilli ; † September 24, 1862 in Marburg an der Drau ) was the first bishop of the newly formed diocese of Lavant-Marburg . He was of great importance for the Slovenian national movement as a promoter of popular education as well as a writer and poet.

Life

Slomšek studied theology and philosophy and was ordained a priest in 1824 . After that, he was spiritual in the seminary in Klagenfurt for more than a decade . In 1838 he became pastor in Saldenhofen an der Drau. In 1842 he was appointed to the cathedral chapter and appointed diocesan school overseer in St. Andrä im Lavanttal . In 1846 he became pastor of Cilli and in the same year Prince-Bishop of the Diocese of Lavant , whose seat was moved to Marburg an der Drau in 1859 .

In 1999 he was beatified by Pope John Paul II .
