Bishop Ivan Tomažič

Ivan Jožef Tomažič (born August 1, 1867 in Ormož , † February 27, 1949 in Marburg (Drau) ) was Bishop of Lavant .

After finishing high school in Ljubljana, Ivan Jožef Tomažič attended the theological school in Marburg ad Drau and was ordained a priest on December 5, 1898. He served as a chaplain in Videm near Celje and then went to Innsbruck , where he taught theology in 1906. In 1905 he was appointed episcopal secretary in Lavant, in 1915 he was canon , in 1916 cathedral dean , in 1925 prelate . From 1920 to 1922 he taught church history in Marburg.

On June 6, 1929, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Lavant and on August 1 , he was ordained bishop with the titular diocese of Bargala . At the same time he was also Vicar General of Lavant. On June 27, 1933, he succeeded Andrej Karlin as Bishop of Lavant. Bishop Tomažič founded the Catholic Action , a Congregation for Mary , the Slomšek Brotherhood of St. Cyril, the Catholic youth organization "Mladce", a Catholic student association and a few other religious organizations. The seminary in Marburg and the higher theological school were built under his patronage .

The German occupation of his diocese fell during his reign, with Bishop Tomažič protesting several times against the occupiers and their dealings with the Catholic Church.

Bishop Tomažič died in 1949 and was buried in Marburg Cathedral.
