Peka Peka is a small coastal settlement in the Kapiti Coast District of the Wellington regionon the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The settlement is located around 5 km north of Waikanae and around 11 km southwest of Otaki directly on the coast of the Kapiti Coast . The northern end of Kapiti Island is 9 km west of the settlement. Peka Peka can be reached from New Zealand State Highway 1 , which passes the settlement 2.5 km to the east, via a country road.

In the 2013 census, the town had 360 inhabitants, 42.9% more than in the 2006 census.

Trivia

The settlement, which is also really unknown in New Zealand, made it into the news in 2011 when a 10-month-old emperor penguin appeared on the beach of the settlement in June of that year , the genus of which is normally native to the Antarctic . The approximately 80 cm tall animal also puzzled experts as to why the bird got lost and landed around 3000 km too far north on the coast of New Zealand. The news about the event even made it to Germany and was worth an article in Spiegel Online Magazin on June 21, 2011 .
