Waikanae is a city in the Kapiti Coast District of Wellington on the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name of the city means in the Māori language "The watercourse of the mullet ", where " wai " stands for water and " kanae " for mullet.
geography
The city is located around 34 km north-northeast of Porirua and around 32 km southwest of Levin on the coast of the Kapiti Coast . Wellington , the largest city in the region, is around 52 km south-southwest.
Waikanae Beach is the neighboring place to the coast and about 5 km north-northwest this is the place Peka Peka . To the east of the city rise the Tararua Range and the Akatarawa Valley , which is home to the Staglands Wildlife Reserve . The Waikanae River flowssouth of the cityand flows into the Tasman Sea around 5 km west of the city center.

In the 2013 census, the town had 7587 inhabitants, 3.4% more than in the 2006 census.
economy
There are several service companies in the city, a quarry and gravel and concrete works on the southern outskirts. Sheep breeding is preferred in the surrounding area.
Infrastructure
Road traffic
The New Zealand State Highway 1 runs through Waikanae and connects the city with all cities and towns on the coast to the north and south. A country road leading into the mountains branches off to the south and connects the city with Upper Hutt, around 28 km to the south .
Rail transport
The North Island Main Trunk Railway also runs through town . From the city, suburban trains on the Kapiti Coast Line run to Wellington . On the section to Paraparaumu , Kiwi Rail Scenic Journeys operates two train connections, the Capital Connection between Palmerston North and Wellington and the Northern Explorer between Auckland and Wellington .
