history

The archbishopric emerged from the Salzburg suffragan diocese Lavant , which was originally located in the Carinthian Lavanttal and initially included the area around St. Andrä in the Lavanttal .

In 1859 the bishopric was moved to Maribor (Marburg an der Drau): In order to be able to better administer the elongated diocese of the former diocese of Lavant, the Carinthian parishes were ceded to the diocese of Gurk in 1859 , and the district around Marburg became part of the diocese of Lavant. Marburg became the new bishopric under the important Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek . Because of its location in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes , later Yugoslavia , the Lavant diocese was detached from the ecclesiastical province of Salzburg on May 1, 1924 . Until 1923 the bishops of this diocese, who from 1446 onwards had the title of Prince Bishop , were proposed and consecrated by the Archbishop of Salzburg . The use of the title Prince Bishop and the use of the secular signs of dignity associated with it (such as the prince's hat and coat ) was approved by Pope Pius XII in 1951 . also formally abolished.

On March 5, 1962, the diocese of Lavant (ina) was renamed Maribor (ensis) and on November 22, 1968 it was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Ljubljana as a suffragan . On April 7, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. with the Apostolic Constitution Sacrorum Antistites the ecclesiastical province of Maribor and elevated the diocese of Maribor to the archbishopric and seat of the metropolitan ; the newly founded dioceses Celje and Murska Sobota were subordinated to the Archdiocese of Maribor as Suffragan dioceses .

In March 2018 were retired Archbishop Franc Kramberger and former diocesan economist Mirko Krašovec because of infidelity in the context of risky transactions in shares of the Slovenian prosecutor indicted . Kramberger, who was charged with three other men, denied direct involvement in the crime.

Together with the suffragan dioceses Celje and Murska Sobota , the archdiocese forms the ecclesiastical province of Maribor.

Economic activities

At the end of 2007 it became known that the diocese was engaged in risky private-sector activities on a large scale. At that time, the diocese asked the Vatican Bank for two loans of five million euros each. At the request of the Apostolic Nuncio in Slovenia, the Vatican then sent the accounting expert Gianluca Pirredda to Maribor as an Apostolic Visitator to clarify the events . In January 2008, the Archdiocese sold its majority stake in the telecommunications company T-2 doo , as a TV station from T2 also broadcast pornographic programs.

In 2011 it became known that the two investment companies Zvon Ena Holding and Zvon Dva Holding , in which the Archdiocese is the majority owner, had become insolvent. For example, Zvon Ena held six percent of the shares in Adria Airways .

The dire financial situation of the Archdiocese of Maribor led to the simultaneous resignation of the two Slovenian Archbishops Anton Stres of Ljubljana and Marjan Turnšek of Maribor on July 31, 2013 . This should enable a new beginning for the Church in Slovenia.
