Alojzij Cvikl SJ (born June 19, 1955 in Celje ) is a Slovenian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Maribor .

Life

Alojzij Cvikl entered the Jesuit order in 1974 and studied at the Faculty of Theology in Ljubljana and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He received on 3 July 1983, the sacrament of Holy Orders . After further studies, he obtained a licentiate in education and social sciences at the Lumen Vitae Institute in Brussels in 1990 .

As a priest he was first chaplain in Ljubljana and then boarding school director and religious teacher at the Archbishop's Institute of St. Stanislaus in Ljubljana. From 1995 to 2001 he was Provincial of the Slovenian Jesuit Province and from 1996 President of the Conference of Major Superiors of Slovenia. From 2001 to 2010 he was the rector of the Pontifical Collegium Russicum in Rome. From 2010 he was an economist for the Archdiocese of Maribor.

Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Maribor on March 14, 2015. He was ordained bishop by the Apostolic Nuncio in Slovenia, Archbishop Juliusz Janusz , on April 26th of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Celje , Stanislav Lipovšek , and the auxiliary bishop emeritus Jožef Smej from Maribor.
