Georg Stobäus von Palmburg , also Stobaeus , Jurij Stobej (Slovenian) and Stoböus , in German probably Stobe (* 1532 in Braunsberg , Prussia (today Braniewo, Poland ); † October 23, 1618 in Töllerberg Castle near Völkermarkt , Carinthia ) was 1584 to 1618 Catholic prince-bishop of the diocese of Lavant .

Life

In his letters he names Neisse in Upper Silesia as the place of birth, other sources make Braunsberg appear more likely. He was trained at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome , then was pastor in Graz and cathedral dean of Brixen .

The Archbishop of Salzburg , Johann Jakob von Kuen-Belasy , appointed him bishop of the Lavant diocese on October 19, 1584, which had previously been administered for twelve years by the Seckau bishop Georg Agricola as administrator. Stobäus found a difficult situation, as almost the entire nobility and part of the population had become Lutheran . He began reforming the clergy and visiting parishes in his diocese.

Archduke Ferdinand appointed him advisor and governor for Inner Austria in 1597 . Stobäus held these offices until 1608. In 1598 he worked out a plan for Ferdinand to carry out the Counter Reformation . He advised expulsion of Lutheran preachers and avoidance of martyrs . In Graz the city councils had to become Catholics or give up their offices. The citizens who did not want to become Catholic had to emigrate. These measures were carried out by armed reform commissions in Styria , Upper Carinthia and Carniola - supported by Bishop Martin Brenner of Seckau . At that time he had his residence on the Grazer Palmburg named after him .

Despite his zeal for the Catholic faith, he was considerate in personal encounters with Protestants. He did not seek honorary positions and turned down the offer of cardinal appointment . He was buried in the cathedral church of St. Andrä .
