Johann Jakob Kuen von Belasy (also: Johann Jakob Khuen-Belasi , * around 1515 ; † May 15, 1586 ) was an Archbishop of Salzburg .

Life

Johann Jakob came from the old South Tyrolean family Khuen von Belasy , who were elevated to imperial baron status in 1573 . He was considered a man of absolute piety, zeal for faith, personal integrity and an impeccable way of life.

During his reign, Archbishop Kuen-Belasy mainly took measures to better defend the country as well as measures in connection with the Counter-Reformation. In 1563 he had an extensive building project carried out at Hohenwerfen Castle so that the castle could withstand the new firearms and had the castle complex converted using Italian fortress architecture. 1573 he also built the great palace of the castle. At the Hohensalzburg Fortress, however, he only had minor details added. His coat of arms with the year 1566 can be found here on the courtyard side on the stables and the salt store. He also renewed the Tauernhaus Wisenegg in Obertauern for the weekly messenger journey from Salzburg to Lungau. Under the Archbishop, Rif Castle near Hallein was expanded into a small summer residence after 1560. So the castle temporarily became a place of princely music care.

From 1571 to 1582 the archbishop moved his residence to Mühldorf , as the plague raged in the city of Salzburg .

The attempted establishment of a Jesuit college in Salzburg in 1577 as part of the Counter Reformation failed due to the opposing viewpoints of the Jesuits and the Benedictines of St. Peter . During his reign, the Franciscan order was brought to Salzburg, which in 1583 found a place in the shortly before abandoned monastery of St. In order to better educate the priests, Kuen-Belasy had a (albeit modest) seminary built in the Kaiviertel around 1580 .

After Kuen-Belasy suffered a stroke in 1579, he had to leave most of the government work to his coadjutor and later successor Georg von Kuenburg .

Again in 1581 and 1582 Protestant clergymen were executed or imprisoned for life.
