history

Excavations show that there was a large Roman settlement in the area around Maasdam from 70 AD. The finds include a large grave field, a dock, roads, a bridge, a harbor and a dam. The finds indicate the great strategic importance of the area on the northwestern border of the Roman Empire.

Around 1270, during the reign of Floris V , the eponymous dam over the Oude Maas permanently connected the towns of Poelwijk in Tiesselijnswaard and Weede in Grote Hollandse Waard.

In 1957, the ruins of a large castle from the beginning of the 13th century were discovered near Maasdam. If the ruins were initially thought to be the remains of Duyvestein Castle, recent research suggests that the castle belonged to the lords of Weede. The castle was destroyed in 1421 during the Elizabeth flood. The area around the castle ruins is now protected as a Rijksmonument .

The Elisabethenflut also destroyed Maasdam and Poelwijk. With permission from Philip III. Maasdam was rebuilt in 1427 by the first ambassador Jan Nemery. Maasdam remained in the hands of the Nemery family until 1497. After several changes of ownership, ownership passed to Charles Philippe van Dorp in 1700. When his daughter Anna Maria Elisabeth van Dorp married, ownership changed to the Van der Duyn family.

The last vassal of Maasdam, Frans Adam van der Duyn van Maasdam (1771–1848), was one of the three nobles of the Driemanschap . After the liberation of the Netherlands at the end of the Napoleonic Wars , this triumvirate ruled the Souverein Vorstendom of the Vereenigde Nederlanden , the predecessor of the Kingdom of the United Netherlands, from 1813 .

From January 1, 1812 to January 1, 1984 Maasdam was the name of a municipality consisting of the village of Maasdam and the surrounding polders . From 1812 to 1817 and from 1832 to 1984 the hamlets of Cillaarshoek and Sint Anthoniepolder also belonged to the municipality of Maasdam.

From 1984 until the municipal reform in 2019, Maasdam was part of the Binnenmaas municipality .
