The Karsan Otomotiv Sanayii ve Tic. A.Ş. is an automobile , commercial vehicle and tractor manufacturer with corporate headquarters in Bursa , Turkey . From here the company operates its two nearby plants in Akçalar and in the industrial park in Nilüfer .

Company history

It was founded in 1966 under the management of the then parent company Koç Holding . In 1998 İnan Kıraç then acquired the majority of the shares in the manufacturer and thus incorporated it into his Kıraça Holding . Until then, Karsan only operated his Akçalar plant, which produced tractors under its own brand name. In 1999 the workshop was renovated and production was restarted in October with an increased production capacity of 40,000 units per year in two-shift operation and 60,000 units in three-shift operation . The maximum factory utilization specified by the manufacturer, however, is 100,000 units. The production and assembly of the cabs for the tractors as well as the production of spare parts and some vehicle parts were relocated to the newly built plant in Nilüfer. Since then, in addition to tractors, Citroën , Fiat , Hyundai and Peugeot vehicles have also been manufactured under license.

In 2010, Karsan took part in a bid by the City of New York for a large-capacity taxi ready for series production, with competitors such as Toyota , Honda and General Motors . As part of this, the Turkish company presented the concept of its Karsan V1, but the contract then went to Nissan with its NV200 model .
