The Nissan Serena is a van from the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan that has been in production since 1991. It replaced the Nissan Vanette C22 in the model range , which was still offered in Japan and Europe until 1993 and 1994, respectively.

In Europe only the first generation C23 of the Serena was offered. From 1992 to 2001 the Serena C23 was produced in Spain by Nissan Motor Ibérica for the European market. In the model range of Nissan Europe, on the one hand the compact van Nissan Almera Tino built from 2000 and on the other hand the Nissan Primastar, which was offered from 2002, replaced the Serena C23. A directly comparable successor has only been available since 2011 with the Nissan Evalia .

There was a choice of two petrol engines for the C23 : with a displacement of 1.6 liters and an output of 74, in Europe 71 kW (100 and 96 PS) and 2.0 liters with 96 kW (130 PS). The diesel engine with a displacement of 2.0 liters, which is also offered, has an output of 55 kW (75 hp) in Europe and, with a turbocharger and intercooler, 67 and 71 kW and (91 and 97 hp) in Japan. The motors sit behind the front axle below the driver and front passenger seats and drive the rear wheels via a five-speed gearbox and a cardan shaft , which are guided by a rigid axle on leaf springs . The front wheels are individually suspended on MacPherson struts and wishbones . In Japan the C23 was also available with all-wheel drive , but not in North America and Europe. A four-speed automatic transmission was available for all versions in Japan and North America.

In Japan, production of the C23 series was discontinued in 1998 and the Nissan Liberty was introduced as the successor. In Europe, Nissan continued to produce the Serena C23 for the time being. It received a facelift in 1998 and there was now an optional automatic transmission for the gasoline engines. Production in Europe was finally stopped in September 2001, and there was no direct successor on this market.

The Nissan Serena C24 was offered in Japan and other Asian markets from June 1999.

In contrast to its predecessor, the C24 was equipped with front-wheel drive . The engines were positioned in front of the front axle under the bonnet and were combined with front-wheel drive as standard , although an optional all-wheel drive was again available. In addition, a new CVT automatic transmission has now also been offered. Two sliding side doors and a tailgate were also standard, and the increased length of the overall larger body meant that nine seats were now possible. Comfort had increased further with extensive standard equipment, including a navigation system, heated and electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, central locking and power windows. Upon request, the sliding doors could be equipped with an electric drive and an associated remote control.

In 2002 over 500,000 units of the C24 had already been sold in the home market of Japan. In 2003, production moved from Aichi Machine Industry to the Nissan Nissan Motor Tochigi plant . At the same time, the equipment was expanded to include the intelligent Keyless Go key .

In 2005, the production of the C24 generation in Japan ended. The C24 is still being built in Malaysia .

In 2005 Nissan started production of the third generation of the Serena. Like the Nissan Lafesta , the new model was based on the Group's C platform. In addition to production in Japan, from where vehicles were exported to Hong Kong , among others , the Dongfeng Motor Corporation- Nissan joint venture enabled local production for China in the city of Zhengzhou ( Henan Province ).

The body of the C25 received a modern, angular and sporty design. The distribution of the glass surfaces has also been adapted to the new style: the front side windows are still below the attachment of the exterior mirror and the side glass surface, which narrows slightly upwards just in front of the B-pillar, underlines the styling of the vehicle. The Serena has broken away from its original purpose as a workhorse and has risen to the class of what is known as leisure models in Japan. The third Serena generation also became a popular object for many Japanese tuners to bring in new creations. CVT automatic transmissions and an improved all-wheel drive system were again available as options. Four disc brakes were now installed as standard.

In December 2007, the Serena C25 received a facelift. In the course of this, a new grille, new exterior mirrors and modified headlights were installed. The latter were equipped with lower lids to give the Serena a more sporty look.

From 2007 to 2009, the C25 secured the title of Japan's best-selling van for three years in a row. In April 2010, one million units of the Serena C25 had been sold in the Japanese home market.

As of November 29, 2010, the fourth generation of the Serena was sold in Japan.

The design of the C26 is strongly based on the predecessor, which is particularly evident from the retention of the distinctive side line. Nevertheless, despite the slight change in the shape, the air resistance was reduced by around eight percent. There are three equipment lines available, all of which have sliding doors with an electric drive as standard. The basic variants G , S and X as well as a version modified by the Nissan tuner Autech Japan as Serena Rider . The 2.0-liter direct-injection petrol engine , which has been available since the start of sales, can be combined with front-wheel or all-wheel drive, with the latter variant having slightly less power and torque. The gasoline engine has a particularly environmentally friendly design and a start-stop system, depending on the equipment . A special feature of this system is the so-called ECO motor , which takes on the function of the alternator and starter and allows the combustion engine to be started more quickly and more quietly. A continuously variable CVT automatic serves as the transmission .

In February 2011 the top model "Highway Star" was introduced. This equipment variant has xenon headlights and automatic low beam with level control. The sliding door opens automatically using the one-touch function (with anti-trap mechanism).

In Japan's registration statistics, the Serena was ranked fourth in 2011.
