The first version of the SX4 was the successor to the compact class model Suzuki Liana and the compact SUV Suzuki Ignis .
These two orientations are also reflected in the SX4, of which there are three versions. In addition to the usual forms as a five-door hatchback and four-door notchback, there is a crossover based on the hatchback .
The crossover variant was first introduced to the market in Germany and marketed most aggressively; it is produced together with the identical Fiat Sedici at Magyar Suzuki in Hungary. This SX4 should represent a connection between sedan and off-road vehicle . Accordingly, the car is optionally available with selectable all-wheel drive (i-AWD).
The premiere of the Suzuki SX4 took place at the 76th Geneva Motor Show . The sales start in Germany took place in June 2006.
The SX4 selectively driven by a 1.5-liter gasoline engine (fuel premium unleaded), the 73 kW (99 hp), a 1.6-liter gasoline engine (fuel premium unleaded) 79 kW (107 hp), or a 1.9-liter common rail - diesel engine with 88 kW (120 hp). The carbon dioxide emissions are between 162 g / km and 185 g / km. Both the diesel, which is equipped with a particle filter as standard, and the gasoline engines meet the Euro 4 standard.
For the North American market there is a gasoline engine with a displacement of 2.0 liters and 112 kW (152 hp).
The notchback version of the SX4, which appeared on the European market in October 2007, was presented at the 77th Geneva Motor Show. In China, this body design was already available at the same time as the steep tail was launched. The common rail diesel engines come from Fiat, the gasoline engines from Suzuki.
Facelift
A few weeks after the structurally identical Fiat Sedici, the SX4 was also slightly modified in late summer 2009. As part of this facelift, the front section was revised and received a new bumper, which has one less transverse louvre, as well as a slightly modified radiator grille and smaller fog lights. The 1.6-liter "M16a" gasoline engine was still available for the engines on offer. From now on it has an output of 88 kW (120 PS), which means an increase in output of 13 PS.
The previous 1.9-liter diesel was replaced by a 2.0-liter diesel with 99 kW (135 hp). In addition, all models now meet the Euro 5 emissions standard. The revised model was presented at the IAA 2009 and has since been available in Germany. The SX4 had the complete package of airbags as standard in all equipment lines, consisting of driver and front passenger airbags, side and window bags and side impact protection. The version with switchable all-wheel drive (i-AWD) had plastic panels, underrun protection, roof rails and increased ground clearance.
Production ended in mid-2014, but stock vehicles were still available until summer 2015. The successor appeared in autumn 2013 as the SX4 S-Cross.

In October 2013, the second generation of the Suzuki SX4 with the additional designation S-Cross was presented in stores. The predecessor remained on offer as the SX4 Classic until summer 2015 .
The S-Cross is larger than the SX4, which is noticeable both in the passenger compartment and especially in the trunk (430 l for the S-Cross compared to 270 l for the SX4).
Until September 2016, only the 1.6-liter petrol engine with 88 kW (Suzuki M16a) and the same size and 88 kW diesel (bought in from Fiat) were on offer. Both variants could be ordered with front or all-wheel drive, whereby the gasoline engine was available with a 5-speed and the diesel with a 6-speed manual gearbox (gasoline engine) or are (diesel engine). The gasoline engine was also available with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) from the start (manufacturer JATCO, type "CVT 7"), the diesel engine with an automatic 6- speed dual clutch transmission ("TCSS", manufacturer: Fiat Powertrain Technologies ) since autumn 2015 .
Since September 2014, Suzuki offered the special model "limited", which was available with both front-wheel and all-wheel drive. The “limited +” special model was added later.
At the end of 2015, the model range was slightly revised; Since then, the automatic CVT and TCSS transmissions have only been available in combination with the top equipment "Comfort +". Previously, the medium equipment "Comfort" with CVT was also available.
The “Club” equipment in the entry-level model includes, among other things, manually adjustable air conditioning, electric window lifts on all doors and cruise control. The "Comfort" model is also equipped with seat heating (front), keyless entry / start system, leather steering wheel with radio remote control / hands-free system and two-zone automatic air conditioning, the "Comfort +" version also has a panoramic sliding roof, xenon headlights, parking aid and navigation system .
Facelift
In September 2016 the SX4 S-Cross received an extensive revision. The front was redesigned and the 1.6-l gasoline engine with manifold injection (M16a) was replaced by supercharged 1.0- and 1.4-l gasoline engines from the Baleno and Vitara , and the Jatco CVT transmission was no longer required the 6-speed automatic from Aisin already used in the Vitara.
