The Swift (MZ / EZ) presented in 2005 no longer has much in common with its predecessors. The type is more robust, larger and also heavier.

In the international market, the Swift was also sold under other brand names , including a. in Japan as Suzuki Cultus , in India as Maruti Esteem , in America as Chevrolet Sprint , Pontiac Firefly and Geo Metro, and in Australia as Holden Barina . In Japan, the first generation of Isuzu was also marketed as the Isuzu Geminett . With the Suzuki Dzire , a notchback version based on the Swift has been built since 2008.

Swift GTi

The 1.3 l 16V with 74 kW / 101 PS was the largest engine in the Swift. The GTi engine was only available in the hatchback model.

The construction of the GTi engine was intended for the later Suzuki Hayabusa 1300 and is considered to be the forerunner of the super motorcycle. The engine was developed in the early 1980s and was already installed in the previous model (AA). The GTi variant was only available in the AA and EA series. With the MA series, production of the GTi was stopped again.

Legal dispute over GTi abbreviation

“Europe's largest car manufacturer, Volkswagen, suffered a defeat in court in the trademark dispute against the Japanese manufacturer Suzuki. Volkswagen cannot take action against the Swift GTi brand registered by Suzuki because there is no likelihood of confusion between this brand and the VW GTI brand. That was decided by the ECJ in Luxembourg. The EU court pointed out that many car manufacturers across Europe such as Rover, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Peugeot, Suzuki and Toyota use the letter combination GTI to indicate the technical characteristics of different models. In early 2008, the Swift received a facelift, which also saw the introduction of a 1.3-liter diesel engine with a diesel particulate filter .

safety

The basic model Swift Classic , which was initially offered, only had driver and front passenger airbags as well as front disc brakes and rear drum brakes in addition to the usual ABS and seat belt tensioners . The Swift Sport with the most powerful engine also has rear disc brakes.

Since 2009, all models ( Club , Comfort and Sport ), with the exception of the 4 × 4, also had ESP , which was previously only available from Swift Sport . All types were also equipped as standard with a total of six airbags (driver / front passenger, side and curtain airbags). When Euro NCAP - Crash test such a car was in the assessment of occupant safety review of four stars out of five (33 points) and in the child safety three stars out of five (27 points). Pedestrian safety was rated with 20 points and three out of four possible stars.

From September 2010, the fifth edition of the Swift was available. In addition to the three and five-door hatchback models, there was also a notchback variant, but only outside of Europe.

Visually it was very similar to its predecessor, but was completely revised technically. No part has been taken from the previous model. With the help of new engines, consumption has been reduced by 20 percent without any loss of performance.

At the beginning of production, two engine variants were available, a 1.2-liter gasoline engine and a 1.3-liter turbodiesel. The petrol engine was also available with all-wheel drive from the beginning of 2011.

At the end of 2011 a Swift Sport came out again . The 1.6-liter suction gasoline engine came from its predecessor, but in a modified form it now developed 100 kW (136 hp). The five-door variant was also available in Germany. Visually, the sport stood out from the normal model with a modified front section, a rear spoiler and diffuser as well as rear lights with different designs, bi-xenon headlights and a sporty, rounded interior.

Facelift

In October 2013, the Swift was slightly redesigned and received a redesigned radiator grille and a redesigned front apron with LED daytime running lights and indicators recessed in the side mirrors from the "Comfort" equipment line. From now on, these models also received an automatic start-stop system, which reduced consumption. As a result, the diesel consumed 3.8 liters of diesel per 100 km, while the smaller petrol engine consumed 4.9 liters of Super per 100 km.

After the first images of the sixth generation were prematurely distributed on the Internet in mid-March 2016, Suzuki officially presented the new Swift on December 27, 2016. The small car went on sale in Japan on January 4, 2017. The European version made its debut at the 87th Geneva Motor Show in March 2017 and has been available from dealers since May 13, 2017 at prices starting at EUR 13,790. Outside Europe, the notchback version Suzuki Dzire was also introduced on May 16, 2017 . The addition of Swift in the model name was dropped with the introduction of the new generation.

The sixth generation Swift is one centimeter shorter, three centimeters flatter and four centimeters wider than the previous model. By using a new platform, on which the Suzuki Baleno is also based in a modified form , the weight could be reduced to around 900 kg. The rear door handles of the only five-door vehicle are now located next to the C-pillar, the front grille has become significantly larger.

The two engines that were initially available were also used by Suzuki in the Baleno. The 82 kW (111 PS) one-liter turbo engine is also available as a mild hybrid SHVS or with a 6- speed automatic transmission , the weaker 1.2-liter naturally aspirated engine, as in the previous model, also with all-wheel drive . On 23 June 2018, the Swift followed Sport with the 103 kW (140 hp) 1.4-liter gasoline engine from the Vitara S . This debuted at the IAA in September 2017 in Frankfurt am Main.

In July 2020, Suzuki presented a revised version of the Swift. The one-liter gasoline engine is omitted.

safety

In 2017, the Suzuki Swift was tested for vehicle safety by Euro NCAP . In the basic version, the Swift received three out of five possible stars. However, since a safety package is optionally available for the model, the Swift was also tested with the safety package. In this test, it received four out of five stars.
