history

The Crufts dog show in 1891 was open to all breeds

The Crufts is named after its founder Charles Cruft . The first event took place in 1886 under the name "First Great Terrier Show". From 1891 it ran for the first time under the current name Crufts: "Cruft's Greatest Dog Show". Here all known pedigree dogs were invited for the first time . The exhibition quickly gained popularity: in 1886 there were 600 participants, in 1891 more than 2,000. At the anniversary show in 1936, the organizers counted 10,650 entries. Only those participants who have qualified for the Crufts in advance may take part in the show.

After Charles Cruft's death, the exhibition first took place under the auspices of the Kennel Club in 1948 and was held in the Olympia exhibition hall in London . Because of the growing number of registrations, it was moved to the Earls Court Exhibition Center in 1979 . It has been held at the National Exhibition Center in Birmingham since 1991 and now lasts 4 days. At Crufts 2007, which took place from March 8th to 11th, 140,000 visitors were expected.

In 2009 the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) ended its collaboration with Crufts after 42 years as a result of the abuses in dog breeding portrayed in the documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed .

In 2012, independent veterinary controls were introduced for the Best of Breed (BOB) of 15 breeds to ensure that no animals with exaggerated characteristics were labeled BOB. Six dogs selected by the judges as the best of breed failed the test and no BOB was awarded for the respective breeds ( English Bulldog , Pekingese , Clumber Spaniel , Mastiff , Mastino Napoletano and Basset Hound ).

In 2016 the Crufts celebrated its 125th anniversary.
