The Basset Hound is an FCI recognized British dog breed ( FCI Group 6, Section 1.3, Standard No. 163 ).
Origin and history
The Basset Hound is said to have been described in Shakespeare's Midsummer Night 's Dream . He is said to be descended from an ancient French breed , the Basset d'Artois . Its systematic breeding began in the 19th century: the first pack was put together in 1866, and the first breed was imported from France in 1874. In England, the basset hound received the characteristic of the bloodhound head . In 1883 he came to America, where he was still considered a foreign breed until 1916. In 1957 the first officially recognized basset litter was bred in Germany. Since then, the breed has enjoyed growing popularity there. It is also particularly popular in the UK and USA. In the 1970s, the basset degenerated into a fashion dog with all the associated disadvantages. That is now a thing of the past, with the result that the exaggerations in physique have decreased somewhat.
description
The basset hound is a small, up to 38 cm large, but very massive (up to 35 kg) low-rise dog for pack hunting. The coat is short and close-fitting, usually black, white and brown (three colors) or lemon and white (two colors), other hound colors are permitted. He has long ears.
use
The Basset Hound is not very fast hound , but despite its inertia an avid hunter in small game with a good sense of smell. It is also used as a family dog.
Essence
The basset hound is a sometimes stubborn, but consistently gentle and good-natured family dog, who usually integrates quickly and doesn't like to be alone. He is also friendly towards other dogs and likes to play. He is intelligent and very capable of learning. His hunting instinct can be stronger or weaker, which should not be forgotten when walking.
Diseases
Due to its physique (long back and short legs), the Basset - like other similarly built dogs - can have disc problems and in severe cases paralysis . Furthermore, the short legs can cause frostbite on the scrotum and foreskin in winter . Because of the long, drooping ears, chronic ear infections are more common in the basset hound.
