The French low-rise dog Basset d'Artois comes from the Chien d'Artois and is considered the direct ancestor of the Basset artésien normand . Its origin was in northern France; it is named after the province of Artois in Normandy .
The breed is considered extinct because it is said to have been completely absorbed in the breeding of the Basset artésien normand . It was therefore deleted from the FCI lists in 1938 at the instigation of the Société Centrale Canine (SCC) .
