Charles Cruft ( 1852 - September 10, 1938 ) was a British entrepreneur and founder of the Crufts dog show.

Life

Cruft refused to enter his father's jewelry store at the age of 14 and instead applied to the dog biscuit manufacturer James Spatt. He rose to the management of the company and managed to develop the company into a trading giant.

As a dog food producer, he came up with the idea of holding exhibitions to increase the company's turnover. The first took place in Paris in 1878 . Confirmed by its success, a terrier show followed in London in 1886 , which was continued from 1891 as Cruft's Dog Show for all dog breeds . After his death, his wife asked the British Kennel Club to take over the show. Today Crufts is the largest dog show in the world.

Due to the influence of Charles Cruft, the popularity of pedigree dogs increased , and breed standards and pedigree dog associations emerged in his environment .
