Armand Douglas "Armie" Hammer (born August 28, 1986 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American actor .

Life

Hammer was born in 1986 in Los Angeles, California, the son of entrepreneur Michael Armand Hammer and his wife Dru Ann Hammer (née Mobley ). He has a younger brother. His great-grandfather was the industrialist and art collector Armand Hammer . Hammer grew up in Los Angeles, Dallas and the Cayman Islands .

From 2005 he took on his first smaller roles in various television series. In 2008, Billy: The Early Years , Hammer took on the role of the young Baptist pastor Billy Graham . In the film adaptation of the Vonnegut short story Harrison Bergeron under the title 2081 , Hammer took on the role of the title hero.

In David Fincher's film The Social Network about the creation of the social network Facebook , Hammer took on a double role as the twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss . Josh Pence acted as the body double for Hammer in scenes that showed both twins . The necessary scenes of the second face were later recorded in the studio and digitally transferred to the body of the other Winklevoss twin. In Clint Eastwood's biopic J. Edgar , Hammer took on the role of Clyde Tolson on the side of Leonardo DiCaprio and Naomi Watts . The large-scale Tentpole film Lone Ranger , in which Hammer played the title-giving main character alongside Johnny Depp , flopped in the summer of 2013. Codename UNCLE also fell short of its financial expectations in 2015. Hammer's acting performances in both films were nevertheless received positively by the critics.

After that, Hammer initially devoted himself to smaller film projects. In 2016 he was seen in the historical film The Birth of a Nation as plantation owner Samuel Turner and in a small supporting role in the psychodrama Nocturnal Animals . In the British action comedy Free Fire , he played the middleman Ord involved in an arms trade . In 2017, Hammer took on a leading role in the literary film adaptation Call Me by Your Name . He received critical acclaim for his portrayal of the student Oliver and was nominated for several film awards. In the same year he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

Hammer has been married to journalist Elizabeth Chambers since August 2010. The relationship resulted in two children, a daughter (* 2014) and a son (* 2017).
