The twin brothers Tyler Howard Winklevoss and Cameron Howard Winklevoss (born August 21, 1981 in Southampton , Suffolk County, New York ) are American entrepreneurs , venture capitalists and rowers .

Both studied at Harvard and Oxford . In December 2002 they founded the social network ConnectU together with fellow student Divya Narendra . In 2004, both of them sued their fellow student Mark Zuckerberg on the charge that he had stolen the idea for Facebook from ConnectU . The litigation ended with a $ 65 million settlement from Zuckerberg to the Winklevoss brothers .

In 2008, the brothers took part in the rowing competitions of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing in the two-man boat class without a helmsman and came in sixth there. The following year they finished ninth with the US eighth at the World Rowing Championships in Poland .

Cameron and Tyler lead a venture capital - companies . In April 2013, the brothers announced that they had invested $ 11 million in the cryptocurrency Bitcoin . In June 2013 they announced that they wanted to set up a fund for bitcoins to make it easier for non-computer-savvy investors to invest in bitcoins .

In 2018 they founded the non-profit organization Virtual Commodity Association for the self-regulation of crypto exchange platforms.
