The Tesla Model X of Tesla, Inc. is an all-wheel drive luxury class -Pkw with electric drive . It was presented as a design prototype on February 9, 2012 in Los Angeles and has been delivered to customers since September 29, 2015. Tesla calls the Model X an SUV .

Furnishing

The Model X can accommodate up to seven people. The second and third rows of seats can be reached through double doors. These so-called falcon wings are two-part. Above the window, they have a second hinge parallel to the main hinge, which means that less lateral space is required when opening. When open, the upper parts of the door that open the roof are vertical and the lower parts that open the sides of the car are horizontal. This allows you to stand upright next to the car under the open wing doors, with the lower parts not sticking up. The Model X - like the Model S - has two storage spaces: the trunk in the rear and a frunk (front trunk). The rear trunk in the concept vehicle has a storage space of 745 liters. Folding down the seats increases the trunk volume to over 1645 liters. The storage space under the bonnet offers a load volume of 150 liters. As already known from the Model S, the Model X also has a 17 ″ touchscreen.

The Model X is the first Tesla model that is available in a vegan version on request .

A trailer coupling for a trailer load of up to 2250 kg is included in the basic equipment. This means that rear racks for bicycles or skis can also be attached, especially since roof racks cannot be fitted due to the double doors.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration , it is the safest SUV the agency has ever tested.

Autopilot

Tesla vehicles from October 2014 will have hardware for various driver assistance systems known as "autopilot". This includes a lane departure warning system ( auto-steer ) for expressways, adaptive cruise control (ACC), a lane change assistant and an emergency braking assistant ( AEB ) when driving . There is also a parking assistant ( Auto-Summon ), which can also function without people on board, where this is permitted.

Battery and performance

Tesla offers the Model X in two versions with multiple battery capacities. In all versions, two electric motors each drive one of the two axles. The P100D version presented in August 2016 , with the optional "Ludicrous" mode, accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.9 seconds, making it - along with the Tesla Model S - one of the fastest production vehicles in the world.

Since mid-January 2019, orders have only been accepted for the model variant with 100 kWh battery capacity; production of the cheaper basic models with smaller battery volumes is being phased out.

Tesla guarantees the functionality of the battery for the Model X for 8 years with unlimited mileage, but not for the capacity and performance that will decrease over time with use. For the durability of traction batteries, see also the service life and cycle stability of traction batteries .

Trivia

In March 2018, an Apple engineer died after his Model X hit a concrete wall while driving semi-automated while the driver was playing video games on a smartphone. The NTSB's investigation report of the incident was presented in February 2020. The agency stressed that more needs to be done to educate drivers of such vehicles about the technology's limitations.

The Basel-Stadt canton police are in the procurement of seven Tesla Model X 100Ds worth almost one million Swiss francs, including expansion.

Astronauts taking off with the American spaceship Crew Dragon are driven to the launch pad in a Model X. The vehicle is equipped with special air conditioning and communication systems that are connected directly to the astronauts' spacesuits . The first passengers were Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnken during a test run for the SpX-DM2 mission on May 23, 2020.
