The Tesla Cybertruck is the prototype of a battery-electric , light commercial vehicle from the US manufacturer Tesla . The vehicle in the form of a pick-up is intended to provide an outlook on the manufacturer's first production model in this class. Three engines are planned, the range should be around 400–800 km (depending on the version). The vehicle can be pre-ordered for a deposit of US $ 100 in the USA and EUR 100 in Europe. The fourth quarter of 2021 is specified as the start of production.

A special feature of the vehicle is its body, which is largely made of 30X stainless steel. Prices are expected to start at $ 39,900 for the rear-wheel drive version, with two all-wheel drive versions expected to start at $ 49,900 and $ 69,900, respectively.

According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk , the provision of a light commercial vehicle in the United States is one of the main concerns of the group as it is one of the determining factors, with around 6,500 vehicles sold per day and around 65% (pick-ups 17.6%) market share Classes. The vehicle was pre-ordered over 250,000 times within a week.

Vehicle properties

Rear view of the cybertruck

All models of the Cybertruck should have an autopilot function as standard, as is known from the Model S , X and 3 . There is also a 120/220 V AC output and an adaptive air suspension system that is supposed to adapt to the load. The pneumatic system has a connection for corresponding air-operated tools. Such an output can often be found in larger agricultural machinery whose suspensions are designed in a similar way.

View of the illuminated loading area

The body is made of 3mm thick stainless steel , as used in SpaceX's Starship rocket, and is folded more in the form of a self-supporting exoskeleton. This is what distinguishes the Cybertruck from standard pickups with a supporting chassis . The manufacturer has not yet given any details about the weight.

In addition to permanent rust resistance, Tesla promises a very scratch and impact resistant surface. Painting a body made of stainless steel is technically difficult. Tesla has announced that it will not be offering the vehicle in any other color than the natural color of the stainless steel.

The interior can accommodate six people. The cargo space is around 2800 liters. A cover can be rolled up for loads that are higher than the flatbed cover.

Further equipment should be camping equipment and a photovoltaic roof, which should be able to harvest energy for up to 15 additional miles a day. Corresponding considerations had already been made for the Model 3, but were rejected as uneconomical due to the small surface area.

Motorization

The Cybertruck is to appear in three variants, which differ in the number of engines:

The powertrain itself is very similar to that of other models from the manufacturer. The Cybertruck is compatible with the company's 250 kW supercharger infrastructure. The future planned function for fully autonomous driving is targeted and can be pre-ordered.

Reactions

The reactions to the vehicle design were mixed. On social media, many commentators said they were disappointed with the unexpected appearance, and the company's shareholders also appeared surprised. As a result of the performance, the share price lost about 6% in value. Due to the high number of pre-orders, the value of the share quickly recovered.

However, the information on the range and the (especially in relation to this) low price expectations surprised positively. According to Tesla, the low sales price is mainly due to the low cost of the skeleton construction and the lack of paint.

After other Tesla vehicles have already been added to police operations around the world, at least 15 orders have already been received for a police version of the Cybertruck, including from Mexico and Dubai.

An employee of SGS-TÜV Saar GmbH expressed concerns about the European and German approval process for the vehicle in its current form. The angular front is difficult to reconcile with the demands of pedestrian safety there. In addition, there would be the missing crumple zone of the rigid body, which, in the event of an accident, would transfer the full force of an impact to the occupants.

Prototype of the Tesla Cyberquad

Cyberquad

In the course of the presentation, Musk presented a quad bike specially designed for the Cybertruck and tailored to the loading area , the ATV Tesla (now Tesla Cyberquad ). So far, no more detailed specifications for the vehicle are known, but direct charging via the Cybertruck's 220 V electrical system should be possible. Production is scheduled to begin in 2021. The acquisition should only be possible in connection with the purchase of a cybertruck.

In addition to the plans for the Cyberquad, Elon Musk also announced the production of a suitable dirt bike .

production

Production is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2021 in a specially built plant. According to CEO Musk, several locations in the middle states of the USA are possible. The Model Y produced for the east coast may also be built there.

Trivia

As part of the presentation, vehicles from films such as Blade Runner and a DeLorean DMC-12 from Back to the Future were on display on the premises. The latter vehicle was already used as a model for the gullwing doors of the Tesla Model X and is also the template for the idea of manufacturing parts of the Cybertruck in stainless steel and titanium.

The unsuccessful attempt to demonstrate the resistance of the discs

During the presentation, Tesla's chief designer, Franz von Holzhausen , hit the driver's door with a sledgehammer without any visible traces. However, the demonstration, in which the durability of the discs should be demonstrated, failed. The steel balls thrown onto the glass by Holzhausen tore the panes. In a video published by Tesla in the meantime, the glass holds up. In retrospect, Musk commented on the mishap with the assumption that the blows with the sledgehammer against the driver's door had broken the lower part of the window and thus the stability of the entire surface was impaired. However, the pane on the rear door, which was not hit with a sledgehammer, also broke when the bullet was thrown onto this pane during the presentation. Since January 2020, Tesla has been self-deprecatingly selling a T-shirt that shows a 1: 1 image of the stone impact on the driver's window.

According to Musk, the inspiration for the design was Picasso's interpretation of cubism and the Lotus S1 Esprit , which appeared, among other things, as an underwater conversion in the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me . To optimize the aerodynamics of the angular vehicle, the findings regarding the manipulation of air flows from Musk's space company SpaceX were used. The fundamentals of this technology also come from the time of Chrysler Airflow , the developer of which Carl Breer based on the design of airships and extensively tested it in wind tunnels with the help of Orville Wright . According to Elon Musk Tesla will try further in the course of optimization, a c w value to reach up to 0.3.

November 21, 2019 was selected as the date of the presentation because that is the day the story of Ridley Scott's 1982 science fiction film Blade Runner begins. The location, an area near the SpaceX premises, roughly corresponds to that of the film intro. Syd Mead , the art director of the film, was immediately enthusiastic about the futuristic design of the automobile.

When asked whether the vehicle could cross smaller rivers, Elon Musk replied in the affirmative and announced that the Cybertruck would be able to "swim for a while".
