Orville Wright (1905)

Orville Wright (born August 19, 1871 in Dayton , Ohio , † January 30, 1948 , ibid) was an American aircraft manufacturer .

Life

Orville and his brother Wilbur Wright are still officially awarded the first controlled flight in their native USA, something that is repeatedly doubted. Wright flew 37 meters over the sands of Kill Devil Hills in 12 seconds in a powered aircraft called the Flyer on December 17, 1903 .

In 1936 Wright was elected to the National Academy of Sciences .

Others

British ventriloquist Keith Harris jokingly named his doll Orville, a duck that always complained that it couldn't fly, after Orville Wright.

Trivia

In the American FOX series The Orville , the spaceship of the protagonists was obviously named after Orville Wright. In addition, Captain Ed Mercer has a photo of the Wright brothers' first flight on the wall in his ready room and a model of the first aircraft on his desk.
