Kevin Pietersen MBE (born June 27, 1980 in Pietermaritzburg , Natal , South Africa ) is an English cricketer . He was the captain of England's national cricket team from early August 2008 to early January 2009 .
Youth and family
Pietersen has an English mother and a Boer father. He enjoyed a strict upbringing with his three brothers and attended Maritzburg College.
Pietersen has lived in the UK since 2001 . In December 2007 he married Jessica Taylor, a member of the now defunct pop vocal group Liberty X .
Athletic career
Pietersen began his cricket career in South Africa, where he played for Natal from 1997 to 2000, initially as an off spin bowler , and later more and more as a batsman . In the South African winter of 2000 he played, like many other professionals, for one season at a lower-class English club.
The following year he moved to the English County Championship and initially played for Nottinghamshire. In 2005 he moved to Hampshire.
After Pietersen had ended the mandatory waiting period of four years, he was immediately appointed to the English national team. He played his first One-Day International in November 2004 against Zimbabwe, his first test match in July 2005 against Australia . Since then he has been a regular for the English national team.
He reached both 1000 and 2000 runs in one-day internationals with the lowest number of stakes ever and for a time was at the top of the list of the world's best batsmen in one-day internationals.
When the previous captain of the national team, Michael Vaughan, gave up his post due to weakness, Pietersen was appointed the new captain. He lost this office, but not his place in the team, after a few months due to a conflict with the coach of the English team, who was also dismissed.
On May 31, 2012, he announced that he was no longer available for international limited-over games. Due to the English national team's nomination criteria, his withdrawal from One-Day International also meant the end of participation in the ICC World Twenty20 2012 .
After internal disputes and his temporary expulsion from the national team, an agreement was reached between him and the ECB in October 2012, whereupon Pietersen was re-accepted into the national team and nominated for the test selection in India. He played a major role in the subsequent test series victory, the first in 28 years in India.
On May 12, 2015 Andrew Strauss announced as one of his first decisions as Director of Cricket for the ECB that Pietersen, who was kicked from the national team in February 2014, would not be nominated again until after the Ashes series against Australia in summer 2015 at the earliest can count. Strauss cited a lack of trust in Petersen as the reason for this decision. However, he had offered Pietersen an advisory role for the One-Day International Team, which Pietersen refused. As a result of the cancellation of a nomination for the upcoming Ashses series, Pietersen wanted to compete in the IPL for the Sunrisers Hyderabad , but a medical examination found an Achilles tendon injury that makes this impossible for him.
Awards
In 2005 Pietersen was nominated as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year and one-day international player of the year by the International Cricket Council .
