Liberty X

Liberty X (2006)

Liberty X was a five-piece British pop band . It was created in 2001 as part of the British edition of the talent show Popstars and broke up in 2007 after the release of three albums.

Band history

The band members were Jessica Taylor, Kevin Simm, Kelli Young, Tony Lundon and Michelle Heaton.

In the finale of the first season of pop stars, the five singers were initially subject to the members of the band Hear'Say . Despite the huge media coverage that stormed the winning band, the five defeated finalists also formed a band and founded Liberty. After a few months the band had to change their name to Liberty X after a band of the same name had asserted the naming rights in court.

In September 2001, the debut single Thinking It Over was released, which immediately reached the top ten of the British charts. With their third single Just a Little , Liberty X reached number 1 in the British charts for the only time in May 2002 . It was named Best British Single at the 2003 BRIT Awards . The debut album released at the same time was also successful. It reached number 3 on the charts and stayed in the hit lists for over a year.

In 2003, Being Somebody was the band's second album, which, however, could not match the success of their debut. The first single Being Nobody made it to number 3 on the UK Singles Chart, but did not stay there long. The second single Jumpin ' followed after six months and just barely made it into the top 10 of the UK singles charts, but went largely unnoticed. When the band decided on the third single Everybody Cries in early 2004 , it flopped and the promotion for the album was discontinued. There was a long pause with no news. In the summer of 2004, the song Fresh , which Liberty X had recorded together with Kool and the Gang, was released, but was unsuccessful.

It wasn't until the end of 2005 that the band announced another album. The first single, A Song for Lovers , was a considerable success, but outside of the UK the band had not enjoyed similar successes up to this point. For the first time they tried a release in Germany, but the single did not reach the top 100. It was foreseeable that the third album, titled X , would not be particularly successful.

The album, which only contained ten tracks, was hardly advertised. Of these ten songs, Yo DJ was already represented as B-side on the single A Song for Lovers , so that the album only offered eight new songs. After a bad start at number 29 in the UK album charts, X left the top 75 of the UK album charts after three weeks.

Shortly before the turn of the year, the band recorded a single for Children in Need , but this was unsuccessful despite little advertising. After a good start, A Night to Remember fell off just as quickly as the album.

In early 2006 rumors arose that the band would split up. Liberty X denied this vehemently and published six months later in the summer of 2006, a third single, the song of the same album X . It was only enough to enter the UK singles chart at number 47 for a week, after which the song disappeared from the top 100. After so many flops, the band initially became quiet. The album had been put on hold and the band gradually pursued solo projects. In May 2007, Liberty X finally announced their official breakup and thanked the fans. There were some farewell gigs in the summer of 2007, but as Liberty X the artists won't record anything together or perform live.

At the beginning of 2013 it came to the reunion through the documentary The Big Reunion broadcast by the British television station ITV2 .
