The Rolls-Royce Dawn is a passenger car model from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd. The presentation took place at the International Motor Show in September 2015 in Frankfurt am Main . The model is intended to represent the brand's “small” convertible and largely corresponds technically and stylistically to the Coupé Wraith . The first vehicles were delivered in spring 2016.
target group
With the Dawn, Rolls-Royce is adding a convertible to its model range . Just like the Wraith, it is based on the Ghost platform and - in contrast to the large Phantom series - is not aimed at chauffeur service. The Ghost family, which can be described as “small” by Rolls-Royce standards, is more powerfully motorized than the Phantom family and is particularly appealing to self-drivers as a coupé and convertible. Nonetheless, the Dawn is one of the largest convertibles on the market and positions itself as a direct competitor to the Bentley Continental GTC and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabrio. Rolls-Royce wants to expand its group of buyers, but continues to focus on a highly exclusive segment. The basic price in Germany is EUR 329,630 (incl. VAT) and is thus significantly higher than that of the more powerful Coupé Wraith, which is available from EUR 279,531 (incl. VAT).
Naming
The name pays homage to the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn . 28 of this type were built as a convertible between 1950 and 1954. The name was announced by CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös on May 13, 2015 at the annual dealer conference in Los Angeles. Rolls-Royce showed the car to the public for the first time at the 2015 IAA.
technology
The two-door convertible offers space for four people. Just like the Wraith, the vehicle has rear-hinged doors as a special feature . The drive is taken over by the same engine as in the Wraith, a biturbo- charged V12 engine with 6592 cm³ displacement . However, with 420 kW (570 PS) and 820 Nm of torque, it does a little less than in the Wraith. This performance enables acceleration to 100 km / h from a standstill in 4.9 s. The top speed is electronically regulated 250 km / h. Further differences to the structurally closely related Coupé can be found in the dimensions: The wheelbase of the Dawn is 180 mm shorter, resulting in an overall length of 5,285 mm. The track, on the other hand, is 24 mm wider. The cabriolet weighs 2,560 kg unloaded. The classic soft top opens within 22 s and can also be operated while driving up to a speed of 50 km / h. Another innovation of the Wraith is also in the Dawn: The automatic transmission from ZF uses GPS data to select the optimal gear for the road section ahead.
At the Goodwood Festival of Speed in late June 2017, Rolls-Royce presented the Dawn as a Black Badge version. This is painted in black and has orange accents such as in the door trim, which can be seen as an indication of the setting sun. In addition, the V12 petrol engine with 442 kW (601 hp) and 840 Nm has a little more output than the standard vehicle.
