The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is the first SUV from the British car manufacturer Rolls-Royce Motor Cars .

history

After the number of SUV registrations increased worldwide, Rolls-Royce announced in February 2015 that it wanted to develop a luxury SUV. Three years later, Rolls-Royce announced that the vehicle would be marketed under the name "Cullinan". The name goes back to the largest diamond ever found . The luxury SUV was officially presented on May 10, 2018 in London and will be built in Goodwood .

At the beginning of November 2019, Rolls-Royce presented the Black Badge variant of the Cullinan.

Competitors of the Cullinan include the Bentley Bentayga and the Range Rover .

technology

Technically, the Cullinan is based on the aluminum spaceframe architecture (ASF) introduced with the eighth Phantom generation . The body of the car was designed by the Italian supplier Fontana . It is manufactured at the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing in Moosthenning , Bavaria .

After the Phantom VIII, the Cullinan is the second Rolls-Royce with all-wheel steering . Up to a speed of less than 60 km / h, the steering angle of the rear wheels is opposite to that of the front wheels in order to improve maneuverability. From 60 km / h, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels to improve the stability of the vehicle.

As in the Phantom VIII, the 8- speed automatic transmission from ZF is linked to a GPS receiver that locates the vehicle and measures the speed in order to optimize gear changes. In addition, the on-board electronics work out an optimal damper setting in coordination with the acceleration and the camera systems.

To make getting in and out easier, the SUV can be lowered by four centimeters using the vehicle key. In addition, the doors open in opposite directions as in the Phantom and Ghost .

In order to achieve lower interior noise, a glass wall is installed between the passenger compartment and the luggage compartment.

The Cullinan is the first series-produced Rolls-Royce model to have a tailgate . It is divided into two parts and, if necessary, two “picnic” single seats can be folded out from it, as in the Range Rover SVAutobiography.

The SUV is powered by the 6.75-liter twelve-cylinder petrol engine with 420 kW (571 hp) familiar from the Phantom VIII . The manufacturer specifies the maximum speed as a governed 250 km / h. The platform of the Cullinan is prepared for alternative drives.
