The Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé is the current convertible series of the British car manufacturer Rolls-Royce and the second newly developed model under the direction of BMW . The vehicle was first presented at the North American International Auto Show in January 2007. Production started in the summer of 2007. Rolls-Royce planned to produce 200 units per year. The car received the red dot award: product design 2008 .
At the end of 2016, Rolls-Royce ceased production of the Phantom family. A successor to the sedan went on sale at the beginning of 2018, while the convertible and coupé have no successors.
Conception
design
The basis of the design concept is Study 100 EX, which is based on the basic lines of the Rolls-Royce Phantom VII from 2003. The study was the first Rolls-Royce experimental vehicle in 46 years and was presented on the occasion of the company's 100th anniversary in 2004 at the Geneva Motor Show. Ian Cameron was the chief designer in charge . The style elements shown in the study, such as the engine hood and windshield frame made of brushed metal and the teak cover over the convertible top compartment (it consists of 30 individual parts), were carried over into series production. The suicide doors hinged at the back , which are already known from the Rolls-Royce Phantom sedan and are intended to facilitate entry, have also been retained. The lines correspond to those known from Rolls-Royce. The vehicle has a long bonnet, large wheels and a short overhang at the front and a long one at the rear. The lines slope down slightly on the side flanks. The trunk lid is divided into two parts. The rear part folds down and should be able to serve as a picnic seat.
Furnishing
The Drophead Coupé offers space for four people. As in the limousine, there are compartments for umbrellas built into the doors, which are dried by a fan. Prices start at 440,000 euros. The top consists of five layers, the bottom of which is made of cashmere.
production
In the first year of production, 253 Drophead Coupés were delivered worldwide, which corresponds to 25% of the brand's total volume. In 2008, 431 dropheads and 137 coupe were produced. The share of the series in the total production of the brand was 46.7%. In 2012 the entire Phantom series was revised. This revision, known as Series II, can be seen above all on the headlights.
Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe
Rolls-Royce presented a coupe version of the Drophead at the Geneva Motor Show in February 2008. The coupé has the same technical data as the convertible and is equipped with similar equipment. A starry sky with LEDs is provided for the interior.
At 2590 kg, the Coupé is slightly lighter than the Drophead. It achieves the same driving and consumption figures, only the top speed is 10 km / h above that of the convertible. The price starts at around € 433,000.
