The Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Phantom I , also known as the New Phantom , was introduced by the British automobile manufacturer Rolls-Royce in 1925 as the successor to the Silver Ghost model.

description

Like its predecessor, the Silver Ghost, the Phantom I was built in both the UK and the US , with the US model being introduced a year later and being produced two years longer.

An important improvement over the Silver Ghost was the new inline six-cylinder engine with overhead valves . The cylinders screwed to the crankcase (bore × stroke = 107.9 mm × 139.7 mm) were cast together in pairs and had removable cylinder heads. The long-stroke engine had a displacement of 7668 cc and was 95 HP (70 kW) at 2,750 min -1 powerful enough to move appropriately to the heavy car. The car reached a top speed of 145 km / h. From 1928 the cylinder heads were made of aluminum instead of cast iron. The engine and gearbox were connected with a single-plate dry clutch. The British version was equipped with a four-speed gearbox, while the US models only had three gears. The power was transmitted to the rear axle via a universal joint and a shaft running in a tube.

The front axle was suspended on semi-elliptical leaf springs, the rear axle on cantilever springs. Servo-assisted drum brakes were installed on all four wheels except for early US-made vehicles that were delivered without front brakes.

The US and British versions differed in the wheelbase - both were 3645 mm, but the British version had a long wheelbase of 3823 mm, while the US model only had 3721 mm. The British versions were built in the Rolls-Royce factory in Derby , the US versions were built in Springfield, Massachusetts .

Bodies

Only the chassis and mechanics were made by Rolls-Royce. The bodies were built by a wheelwright at the customer's request . Some of the best known coachbuilders for Rolls-Royce automobiles were Park Ward , Thrupp & Maberly , Mulliner, and Hooper . Most of the Phantom I in the US version were bodied at Brewster & Company in New York.

production

In Great Britain exactly 2269 copies were made up to 1929. In the USA, 1243 pieces were made between 1926 and 1931. The successor was the Phantom II .

Additional info

In the French silent film Gribiche from 1926, a Phantom I can be seen in some scenes. The car can be viewed in great detail: In one scene the chauffeur greases the front axle and in another scene the engine can be seen briefly. The interior is often very easy to see.
