The Rolls-Royce Ghost is a luxury Rolls-Royce sedan that was first presented to the public in April 2009 at Auto Shanghai . The name Ghost is reminiscent of the Silver Ghost model, which was manufactured from 1906 . With a length of 5.40 m, the series is the smallest and also the cheapest in the manufacturer's range at an entry-level price of around € 250,000.

The Rolls-Royce Wraith , which has been in production since 2013, is the coupé version of the Ghost, but - unlike the Phantom - is marketed as an independent model and has 465 kW (632 hp) more power than the sedan. The starting price of the Wraith is around 282,000 euros.

The Dawn Cabriolet, developed on the basis of the Ghost, was presented at the IAA 2015 in Frankfurt am Main . It has been delivered since 2016.

construction

The Ghost was designed by Ian Cameron and constructed by Helmut Riedl. Riedl was already responsible for the development of the 7th generation of the Rolls-Royce Phantom . With the Ghost, Rolls-Royce wants to compete against vehicles from other manufacturers that are significantly cheaper than the Phantom, such as B. the Maserati Quattroporte or the Bentley Continental Flying Spur / Bentley Flying Spur .

The Ghost has 20% identical parts with the BMW 7 Series F01 (produced since 2008) and its predecessor BMW E65 (produced from 2001 to 2008). The wheelbase, track, vehicle height and trunk height differ, however. The parts supplied by BMW are limited to functional components of the vehicle that remain hidden from the vehicle occupant.

The Ghost is powered by a 6.6 l V12 turbo with 420 kW (570 hp) output, which is transmitted to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF . Compared to the larger Phantom, the Ghost is 100 kW more powerful with about the same weight. The curb weight of the car is 2435 kg.

Ghost EWB

Like the Phantom, the Ghost can be ordered as a long version. This bears the addition EWB for Extended Wheelbase, but is driven by the same motor. The 17 cm extension only benefits the rear, which considerably increases legroom. The starting price for the long version is just under 295,000 euros.

Manufacturing and registration numbers

The body-in-white of the Ghost is produced in the BMW Dingolfing plant , the V12 engine is manufactured in the Munich plant . Further processing takes place on our own production line in Goodwood. The paint shop, wood and leather workshop are shared with the Phantom.

Since the market launch in 2010 up to and including December 2017, 223 Rolls-Royce Ghosts have been newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. 2011 was the most successful sales year with 36 units.

Concept vehicle 200 EX as a forerunner

Rolls-Royce 200 EX (2009) at the Geneva Motor Show

The Rolls-Royce 200 EX concept vehicle was officially presented in March 2009 at the Geneva Motor Show and already indicated the direction in which the design of the Ghost production model would go. During its development, the Ghost was known as "RR4".

Unlike the Phantom, the 200 EX is not made of aluminum, but of steel, which is more rigid and can therefore be thinner. The chassis has aluminum multi-link axles at the front and rear with air suspension . The design of the chassis components such as active roll stabilization , variable damping control, air suspension, etc. should always ensure the best possible comfort for the occupants. So z. B. detects whether a rear seat passenger sits down while driving from one side of the back seat to the other and automatically changes the setting of the chassis to compensate.

The engine is a 6.6 l V12 turbo with 420 kW (571 hp) and eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF.

Ghost Series II

At the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014, Rolls-Royce presented the “Series II” facelift of the Ghost. This includes both the Ghost with a short wheelbase (SWB) and the extended version (EWB). The front section has been changed, with a new bumper and modified headlights. In addition, the bonnet and the fenders have new contours. With the Series II, Rolls-Royce is also optionally offering additional new rims and colors. The GPS-supported 8-speed automatic of the Rolls-Royce Wraith was adopted and the engine was increased in its efficiency. The enhanced Black Badge version was presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2016 .
