The Rolls-Royce Phantom VIII is a passenger car model from the British car manufacturer Rolls-Royce Motor Cars . It was presented on July 27, 2017 in the London borough of Mayfair as the successor to the seventh generation of Phantom . The new Phantom has been built in Goodwood since the beginning of 2018 .

In contrast to the previous model, the vehicle is now only offered as a sedan with a normal wheelbase and an extended wheelbase ( Phantom Extended Wheelbase ). Both variants became heavier, but a little shorter. This is probably due to the fact that in China, drivers of a vehicle over six meters long need a bus driver's license. At 5.98 meters, the new long version is now just below that. The Phantom Drophead Coupé and Phantom Coupé based on the Phantom VII will not have a successor. The SUV Cullinan, announced in 2015 and available from 2018, is based on the aluminum spaceframe architecture (ASF) of the new Phantom.

technology

The Phantom VIII is the first Rolls-Royce to feature all-wheel steering . Up to a speed of less than 60 km / h, the steering angle of the rear wheels is opposite to that of the front wheels in order to improve maneuverability. From 60 km / h, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels to improve the stability of the vehicle.

Compared to the predecessor model, the interior of the sedan is said to be ten percent quieter at a speed of 100 km / h. This is achieved by installing 130 kg of insulation material.

The new phantom from the from the previous model is driven known 6.75-liter twelve-cylinder gasoline engine . In the eighth Phantom generation, however, the engine is charged by two turbochargers , increasing the output from 338 kW (460 hp) to 420 kW (571 hp). The manufacturer specifies the maximum speed at 250 km / h.

The 8- speed automatic transmission from ZF is linked to a GPS receiver that locates the vehicle and measures the speed in order to optimize gear changes.

Tranquility Collection

At the 89th Geneva Motor Show in March 2019, the Phantom was presented in the Tranquility Collection limited to 25 copies . The interior of the special model has highly reflective stainless steel, 24-carat gold and a controller that was refined with the material of the Muonionalusta meteorite found in Kiruna in 1906 . Rock from this meteorite is also used in the unique BMW M850i xDrive Coupé Night Sky .
