Leonhard Rausch (born February 5, 1813 in Jülich , † April 19, 1895 in Düsseldorf ) was a German landscape painter and engraver of the Romantic period .

Live and act

Rausch was a friend and pupil of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer , who was six years his senior and who, like him, came from Jülich, and is counted at the Düsseldorf School of Painting . In 1829/30 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and then again from 1839 to 1841. His teachers at the Düsseldorf Academy were Rudolf Wiegmann and Joseph von Keller .

The subjects he preferred were the landscape of his homeland, classical landscapes with biblical motifs and alpine landscapes.

In Aachen , Rausch became known in the 1840s for a series of steel engravings on which he depicted important historical Aachen squares and buildings.

He soon stopped erasing because the etching of the plates damaged his eyes. From its foundation in 1848 until 1870, he was a member of the Malkasten artists' association .

Rausch went on numerous trips, especially to the Alpine regions , where he found the motifs for a large part of his oil paintings, especially in Switzerland and Tyrol. Between 1843 and 1890 his works were represented 17 times at the art and painting exhibition of the Kunstverein zu Bremen . He also traveled to France and exhibited in Besançon and Antwerp .

Wolfgang Müller von Königswinter , who is also known as an art critic, praised Rausch for his naturalistic landscape painting, which was particularly characterized by diligence and faithfulness to nature.

One of his granddaughters married Wilhelm Schreuer .
