Teuta Arifi ( Macedonian Теута Арифи ; born October 19, 1969 in Tetovo ) is a North Macedonian politician ( BDI ) of Albanian origin. In March 2013 she was elected mayor of Tetovo, making her the first woman to hold this post.

education

Teuta Arifi went to elementary and middle school in her hometown of Tetovo. In 1991 she graduated in Philology from the University of Prishtina . In 1995 she obtained a master's degree in philosophy and a doctorate in philology from the University of Skopje .

Political career

Teuta Arifi first entered the political landscape of Macedonia in 2002. That year she was elected to the parliament of the Republic of Macedonia as a member of the Democratic Union for Integration (BDI) . Thus she was the first Albanian woman in the Macedonian parliament. At the same time she was appointed President of the Parliamentary Commission on Foreign Policy. In 2006 she was re-elected to parliament and moved to the parliamentary commission for culture as president. She stayed there until 2010, after being elected for a third term as MP in the 2008 elections . In 2009, Arifi was also elected deputy party president at the second BDI party congress.

She also successfully ran as a candidate for the BDI in the 2011 elections . In July of the same year she was appointed one of the four deputy prime ministers of Macedonia, responsible for questions of European integration.

In the 2013 local elections, Arifi resigned from the post of Deputy Prime Minister and Member of Parliament to compete as the BDI candidate for the mayor's office in Tetovo. She competed against Sadi Bexheti ( PDSH ) and won the elections with 56.98 percent of the vote and a voter turnout of 56.95 percent. She is the first woman to serve as the mayor of Tetovo.

Scientific and social activity

As a PhD in Philology, Arifi has published various academic and political papers. She is one of the founding members of the South East European University in Tetovo and lectures there as well as at the University of Skopje.

Teuta Arifi sympathizes with some ideas of feminism .

Private

Teuta Arifi has been married to the lawyer Shpend Devaja since 1996. The two have a daughter, Elza Devaja-Arifi, and a son, Ilir Devaja-Arifi. In addition to Albanian and Macedonian, she also speaks English , French , Italian and Turkish .

While she was pregnant with her son, Arifi developed cancer . In the meantime she has successfully conquered the disease.
