The Parliament of the Republic of North Macedonia ( Macedonian Собрание на Република Северна Македонија , Albanian  Kuvendi i Republikës së Maqedonisë së Veriut ) is the parliament in the unicameral system of North Macedonia .

120 members of parliament are elected for four years each. Three MPs are elected from the North Macedonian diaspora .

    Elective Zones

In the parliamentary elections, the country is divided into six zones, each electing 20 MPs. In October 2008, three zones were added: North and South America , Europe, and Asia and Australia , each with its own MP. In these zones, citizens living abroad should be able to vote for parliament. This new rule was applied in the 2011 parliamentary elections, where the number of MPs was then increased to 123. In the 2016 election, the number of MPs was reduced to 120 again.

    Previous elections

Parliamentary elections have been held regularly in the country since independence in 1991 (1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2016). In the 1998 elections, VMRO-DPMNE won 11 out of 35 seats. In 2002 the Social Democrats came to power. In the elections they and their coalition together for Macedonia won 61 out of 120 seats. In the next parliamentary elections in 2006, the Social Democrats lost 29 seats. The winner was the coalition led by VMRO-DPMNE with 45 seats out of a possible 120. Shortly afterwards, the VMRO formed a coalition with the Albanian Democratic Party (PDSH) and were able to establish a government. However, since Macedonia initially refused to recognize Kosovo as an independent state in February 2008 and the passage of minority laws was slow, the PDSH left the alliance (boycott) and early parliamentary elections were scheduled for June 1, 2008 . The winner was again the VMRO-DPMNE with 63 seats out of a total of 120 possible. To form a government, the VMRO formed a coalition with the Democratic Union for Integration, which is hostile to the PDSH.

The early parliamentary elections 2011 took place on June 5, 2011 . The new elections initially scheduled for April 24, 2016 were postponed several times and finally held on December 11, 2016. Since President Gjorge Ivanov , who has been a member of the national-conservative VMRO-DPMNE that has ruled since 2006 and is considered a close confidante of the previous Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski , the leader of the opposition Social Democratic League of Macedonia (SDSM), Zoran Zaev , refused the mandate to form a government, it came to one tedious government formation. It was only after a conversation with US Vice Secretary of State Hoyt Yee that Ivanov finally gave in and gave Zaev the mandate to form a government on May 17, 2017. On May 31, 2017, the coalition of the Social Democratic League of Macedonia (SDSM) and two parties from the Albanian minority began work with the election of Zoran Zaev as head of government. The Besa party, which also represents the interests of the Albanian minority, wants to support the new government in parliament on a case-by-case basis, but without officially being part of the government.
