Talat Xhaferi [ ˈtaˌlat ˌʤaˈfɛɾi ] ( Macedonian Талат Џафери Talat Džaferi , born April 15, 1962 in Forino , Gostivar ) is a North Macedonian politician ( DUI ) from the Albanian ethnic group. He has been President of the Parliament of the Republic of North Macedonia since 2017 .

life and career

Talat Xhaferi attended the Përparimi primary school in Čegrane near Gostivar between 1969 and 1977 . 1977 to 1981 he was at the military secondary school in Belgrade and 1981-1985 he graduated from the military academy in Belgrade and Sarajevo in the field of infantry. From 1996 to 1998 he also completed postgraduate studies at the General Mihailo Apostoloski Military Academy.

Xhaferi was an officer in the Yugoslav People's Army from 1985 to 1991 and from 1992 to 2001 in the Macedonian Armed Forces . During the Albanian uprising in Macedonia in 2001 , he joined the rebels of the paramilitary UÇK and deserted the Macedonian army a few days after the Vejce massacre on April 28, 2001. Xhaferi was in command of the Tetovo barracks on the day of the Vejce massacre .

In 2002 he was elected to the Macedonian Parliament as a candidate for integration by the Democratic Union for two years; In 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2016 he was re-elected for further legislative terms. During the reign of Vlado Bučkovski ( SDSM ) between 2004 and 2006, he was Deputy Minister of Defense. Later in 2013, when Nikola Gruevski ( VMRO-DPMNE ) ruled, he became Minister of Defense for a year.

Xhaferi's political career finally saw a rapid rise in 2017. In the wake of the political crisis in Macedonia , after the parliamentary elections in 2016, Nikola Gruevski's ruling VMRO-DPMNE won a very narrow victory and after other parties refused to form a coalition with this party, the crisis worsened. This situation of parliament in limbo was then defused by the previously opposition Social Democratic League of Macedonia (SDSM) signed by Zoran Zaev a coalition agreement with the smaller, ethnic-Albanian parties. The coalition partners agreed on Talat Xhaferi as future parliamentary president, the first in the history of Macedonia from the Albanian population. Shortly after his election on April 27, 2017, demonstrators forcibly entered parliament to protest against the occupation of the office by an Albanian. Zoran Zaev, among others, was seriously injured.
